A Study of Listening Activities and Language Features in the Listening Sections of the Korean Middle School English 3 Textbooks

국문 초록

목적 본 연구에서는 한국 중학교 3학년 학생들이 사용하는 다섯 종류의 영어 교과서를 대상으로 교재 내 듣기 활동의 유형과 출현 빈도를 조사하고 이를 기반으로 구문적 및 언어적 특성을 분석하였다. 방법 영어 듣기 활동을 20개의 범주로 분류하였으며 이를 시각자료와 텍스트 자료로 세분화하였다. 듣기 활동의 분포와 빈도수를 분석하기 위해 통계프로그램 SPSS 23 프로그램을 활용하였으면 듣기 대본에서 구문적 및 어휘적 특성을 평가하기 위해 텍스트 분석 도구 WordSmith 9.0을 사용하였다. 결과 5종 교과서에 수록된 청취 문제의 총 개수는 64개에서 88개 사이로 나타났다. 세부 분석 결과에 따르면, 특정 교과서에서는 88개의 듣기 문제 중 68(77.3%)가 그림 기반 활동으로 구성되어 있지만 다른 교과서에서는 76개중 63개(79.7%)가 텍스트 기반 문제로 구성되어 있었다. 5종 교과서의 문장은 평균적으로 6.4개에서 8.26개의 단어의 단어로 구성되어 있었다. 또한, 각 교과서에 수록된 총 문장 수는 521개에서 629개 사이로 나타났다. 단어의 평균 철자의 길이는 2.71에서 3.98 사이의 범위를 보였으며 문장당 평균 단어 수는 6.4에서 8.26 사이로 나타났다. 결론 본 연구의 결과는 교사 및 교과서 연구자에게 영어 듣기 활동에 대한 교과서별 유사점과 차이점에 대한 유용한 자료를 제시하였다. 더불어, 연구 결과는 교사가 영어 듣기 활동을 위한 보충 자료를 효과적으로 설계하는 데 유의미한 통찰을 제공하였다. 나아가, 듣기 활동의 다양성, 문항 구성, 구문 및 어휘 특성에 관한 분석 결과는 영어 교과서 개발 과정에서 중요한 참고 자료로 활용될 수 있다.

영문 초록

Objectives This study examined the types of listening activities along with the number of listening exercises, syntactic features and lexical features in five English textbooks by Korean third-grade middle school students. Methods The English listening activities were grouped based on 20 criteria broadly categorized as either picture or text. SPSS 23 was employed to analyze the distribution, frequency, and percentages of listening activities and WordSmith 9.0 was used to assess syntactic and lexical features in all listening scripts. Results The total number of listening questions in the textbooks ranged from 64 to 88. Detailed analysis showed that one textbook had a high proportion of picture-based activities, with 68 of 88(77.3%), while another textbook had a high proportion of text-based activities with 63 of 76 (79.7%). The number of sentences for the five textbooks ranged from 521 to 629 sentences. In terms of word length, averages ranged from 2.71 to 3.98 characters. In addition, the words per sentence averaged between 6.4 up to 8.26 words per sentence. The study identified that the quantity of listening activities as well as syntactic and lexical features in the textbooks differed considerably from one another. Conclusions Results from this research may serve three valuable purposes. First, results provide valuable insights for teachers and researchers about the similarities and differences between the textbooks. Second, based on the insights into nature and types of listening activities in the textbooks, teachers can develop supplemental materials that align with their curriculum needs. Finally, the outcome might aid in harmonizing the types and number of listening activities, as well as the syntactic and lexical characteristics in future editions of the textbooks.
