중국 쿤밍 테러 사건에 관한 4개국 뉴스 보도 기사의 비판적 담화분석: 체계기능언어학의 평가어 분석에 기반하여

국문 초록

목적 본고의 목적은 체계기능언어학(SFL)의 평가어 이론(Appraisal Theory)을 활용하여 중국 쿤밍 테러 사건에 관한 동서양 주요 언론의 뉴스 보도 텍스트를 분석함으로써, 텍스트 내 평가적 언어가 사회적 맥락과 어떻게 상호작용하며 특정 이념, 권력 구조, 사회적 태도를 강화하는지 규명하는 데 있다. 방법 본고는 SFL의 평가어 이론을 중심으로, Wodak(1996, 2009)이 제시한 4단계 맥락 분석 모델(Four-level Context Model)을 활용하여 진행하였다. 분석 대상은 중국, 한국, 영국, 미국의 주요 언론사에서 보도한 쿤밍 테러 사건 관련 뉴스 기사로, 텍스트 내적 맥락, 텍스트 간 맥락, 언어 외적 사회적 맥락, 정치적·역사적 맥락의 네 가지 차원에서 평가어(태도평가, 개입평가, 강도평가)를 심층적으로 비교하였다. 결과 동서양 언론은 뉴스 보도에서 평가어를 사용하는 방식에서 뚜렷한 차이를 보였다. 중국 언론은 피해자와 비극적 결과를 강조하며 감정적 공감을 유도하는 태도평가가 두드러졌고, 개입평가에서는 정부와 공공기관의 대응을 긍정적으로 평가하며 신뢰감을 심어주는 방식으로 사용되었다. 강도평가에서는 강렬한 언어로 사건의 심각성과 정부 대응의 중요성을 부각시켰다. 반면, 서양 언론(영국, 미국)은 사건의 맥락과 원인 분석에 초점을 맞추며 객관적이고 중립적인 개입평가를 주로 활용했고, 태도평가는 사건의 사회적·정치적 함의와 국제적 영향을 비판적으로 조망하는 데 사용되었다. 강도평가는 사건의 복잡성과 다양한 관점을 강조하며 독자의 판단을 유도하였다. 이러한 차이는 각국 언론의 제도적 맥락과 사회적 기대치의 차이에 기인한 것으로 보인다. 결론 본고는 평가어 이론과 Wodak의 4단계 맥락 분석 모델을 적용하여 뉴스 보도의 평가적 언어 사용이 단순한 정보 전달을 넘어 특정 사회적 목적과 이념을 강화하는 데 중요한 역할을 한다는 점을 확인하였다.

영문 초록

Objectives The purpose of this study is to analyze the texts of news reports from major Western and Eastern media on the Kunming terrorist incident in China by utilizing the Appraisal of Systemic Functional Linguistics to identify how appraisal language in texts interacts with social context to reinforce certain ideologies, power structures, and social attitudes. Methods This study centers on the appraisal theory of SFL and utilizes the Four-level Context Model proposed by Wodak (1996, 2009) to conduct the analysis. The subjects of the analysis were news articles on the Kunming terrorist incident reported by major media organizations in China, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and the United States, and the appraisal language (attitude, engagement, gradation) was compared in-depth in four dimensions: intra-textual context, intertextual context, extra-linguistic social context, and political-historical context. Results Eastern and Western media showed distinct differences in the way they used Appraisal language in news reports. Attitude was prominent in Chinese media, emphasizing the victims and the tragic outcome to generate emotional empathy, while Engagement was used in a positive way to instill trust in the response of the government and public institutions. Gradation used strong language to emphasize the seriousness of the incident and the importance of the government's response. On the other hand, Western media (UK, US) focused on analyzing the context and causes of the incident and used objective and neutral Engagement, while Attitude was used to critically examine the social and political implications and international impact of the incident. The latter emphasized the complexity of the events and the diversity of perspectives, inviting readers to make their own judgments. Conclusions By applying Appraisal theory and Wodak's four-stage contextual analysis model, this study shows that Appraisal language use in news reports goes beyond the mere conveyance of information and plays an important role in reinforcing certain social goals and ideologies.
