성인학습자 연구의 지형도: 국내 대학에서의 연구 경향과 미래 과제

국문 초록

목적 본 연구는 국내 대학을 중심으로 성인학습자 관련 연구의 동향을 분석하고, 이를 통해 성인학습자 특성이 대학 교육의 변화와 어떻게 연결되는지를 밝히는 데 목적이 있다. 아울러 연구 주제와 방법론의 변화를 고찰함으로써, 향후 연구 방향과 고등교육 정책 수립에 대한 시사점을 도출하고자 한다. 방법 연구를 위해 2004년부터 2024년까지 한국연구재단(KCI)과 한국학술정보원(KISS)에서 제공하는 학술지 논문을 대상으로 ‘대학 성인학습자’를 핵심 키워드로 설정하여 연구 데이터를 수집하였다. 수집된 297편의 논문을 텍스트 마이닝 기법과 네트워크 분석을 활용하여 연구 동향을 분석하였으며, 주요 키워드 빈도 분석, 키워드 간 동시 출현빈도 분석, 중심성 분석 및 커뮤니티 분석을 실시하였다. 결과 2020년대 이후 대학 성인학습자 연구가 급증하였으며, 이는 학령인구 감소와 대학의 평생교육 기능 강화 요구와 관련이 있는 것으로 나타났다. 연구 주제는 ‘평생교육’, ‘원격교육’, ‘자아’, ‘성취’, ‘교육과정’, ‘만족’ 등의 키워드 중심으로 형성되었으며, 키워드 네트워크 분석 결과 성인학습자의 심리적 요인, 평생교육 및 원격교육, 학습자 적응과 성취 요인 등 세 가지 주요 연구 영역이 도출되었다. 결론 본 연구는 국내 대학에서의 성인학습자 연구가 대학 교육의 변화와 긴밀한 관련성을 가지며, 향후 성인학습자의 학습 경험을 개선하고 교육 기회를 확대하기 위한 새로운 접근이 필요함을 시사한다. 특히, 성인학습자의 지속적인 학습 참여를 촉진하기 위해 개인 맞춤형 교육과정, 원격·디지털 교육의 확대, 심리·정서적 지원 방안 마련이 요구된다. 또한, 성인학습자의 교육 만족도를 높이기 위해 실무 중심의 교육 과정 개발과 학습지원 체계 강화가 필요하며, 이를 위한 정책적 지원이 이루어져야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

Objectives This study aims to analyze research trends on adult learners in Korean universities and to examine how the characteristics of adult learners are linked to changes in higher education. It also explores the evolution of research topics and methodologies to suggest future research directions and implications for higher education policy development. Methods For this study, academic journal articles published between 2004 and 2024 were collected from the Korea Citation Index (KCI) and the Korean Studies Information Service System (KISS), using “university adult learners” as the primary keyword. A total of 297 research papers were analyzed using text mining techniques and network analysis. The study conducted keyword frequency analysis, co-occurrence frequency analysis, centrality analysis, and community analysis to examine research trends. Results The key findings of this study are as follows. Since the 2020s, research on adult learners in universities has significantly increased, which appears to be related to the decline in the school-age population and the growing demand for universities to strengthen their lifelong education functions. The primary research themes revolve around keywords such as “lifelong education,” “distance education,” “self,” “achievement,” “curriculum,” and “satisfaction.” Keyword network analysis identified three major research domains: psychological factors of adult learners, lifelong and distance education, and factors influencing learner adaptation and achievement. Conclusions This study suggests that research on adult learners in domestic universities is closely linked to changes in university education, highlighting the need for new approaches to enhance learning experiences and expand educational opportunities for adult learners. In particular, personalized curricula, the expansion of remote and digital education, and the development of psychological and emotional support measures are essential to promote continuous learning participation. Additionally, to enhance adult learners’ educational satisfaction, it is necessary to develop practice-oriented curricula and strengthen learning support systems, supported by policy initiatives.
