애니메이션 영화의 서사구조 자각을 활용한 교양영어수업 효과

국문 초록

목적 본 연구의 목적은 애니메이션 영화를 활용한 교양영어 수업의 한 방안으로 서사구조 자각 활동을 제안하는 것이고 이것이 학습자들의 학업 성취도에 미치는 영향을 규명하고 이에 대한 학습자들의 인식을 분석하는 것이다. 방법 서사구조가 확실한 디즈니 애니메이션 <루카>를 선정하였고 수업 절차에서 루카의 서사 3막 분석이 진행되었다. 학습자들은 토론을 통해 서사 단계를 자각하는 수업 활동에 참여하고 이를 통해 서사구조적 측면에서 등장인물의 행동과 대화를 이해하고 사건의 흐름을 파악하게 된다. 교수자는 학습자들이 루카의 서사 단계를 명시적으로 자각하고 서사구조적 측면에서 애니메이션을 시청할 수 있도록 유도하였다. 서사구조 자각 활동이 학습자들의 영어학습 성취도에 어떤 영향을 미치는지를 파악하기 위해 1차와 2차 성취도 테스트를 시행하였다. 애니메이션 영화를 활용한 서사구조 자각 활동 수업에 대한 학습자들의 반응과 태도를 파악하기 위해 반구조화된 설문조사를 실시하였다. 설문조사는 수업의 마무리 단계에서 학습자들이 매번 제출했던 수업 노트 의견과 함께 질적 분석하였다. 결과 성취도 테스트 결과 2차 테스트 결과가 1차 테스트 결과보다 더 높은 점수가 나왔고 이는 유의미한 차이인 것으로 나타났다. 설문조사와 수업 노트의 질적 분석 결과 학습자들은 애니메이션 서사구조 자각 활동을 진행한 수업에 만족감이 높은 것으로 나타났으며(86.9%) 이러한 만족감의 이유는 수업 활동의 효율성, 영어 표현의 연상에 도움, 애니메이션 영화에 대한 이해 심화인 것으로 나타났다. 결론 영어 교수 및 학습의 좋은 도구로 애니메이션은 더욱 활성화될 필요가 있으며 교수자들은 애니메이션 서사구조의 중요성과 가치를 이해하고 학습자들이 서사구조 분석에 흥미와 관심을 가질 수 있도록 유도할 수 있는 다양한 창의적 수업 개발에 노력을 기울여야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

Objectives This study aims to propose a narrative structure awareness activity for general English classes using animated films and analyze learners’ perceptions of it. Methods The Disney animated film Luca, which has a clear narrative structure, was selected. In the awareness activity, the narrative structure of Luca was analyzed into three acts. Learners participate in class activities that make them aware of the narrative stages through discussion, and they understand the characters’ actions and conversations in terms of narrative structure and grasp the flow of events. The instructor encouraged learners to explicitly recognize the narrative stages of Luca and watch the animation in terms of narrative structure. Two achievement tests were administered to assess the impact of narrative structure awareness activities on learners’ English learning achievement. An semi-structured questionnaire was administered to understand learners’ perception and attitudes toward the class, including narrative structure awareness activities. The questionnaire results were analyzed along with the class notes that learners submitted during each class. Results The result of two tests indicated a significance difference as the second test score was slightly higher than the first one. Qualitative analysis of the learners’ questionnaire responses and class notes revealed that learners were highly satisfied with the classes that incorporated narrative structure awareness activities (86.9%). The satisfaction was attributed to the efficiency of class activities, assistance in recalling English expressions, and enhanced comprehension of movies. Conclusions Animation needs to be more active as a good tool for English teaching and learning, and instructors should understand the importance and value of animation narrative structure and make efforts to develop various creative classes that can induce learners to become interested in narrative structure analysis.
