국문 초록

목적 본 연구에서는 지금까지 국내 대학에서 시도되어 온 무전공 제도의 도입 경위와 실태를 역사적으로 일별하고 그 한계를 짚어보았다. 그리고 무전공 학생의 전공 선택 요인 탐색 등 실증적인 분석 작업과 체계적인 분류 작업이 미흡함을 확인하고, 이러한 문제를 해소해 나가고자 하였다. 방법 이를 위하여 본 연구는 무전공 학생의 인식을 중심으로 제도의 장·단점, 교양과 전공과목 수강신청 기준, 학과 선택 기준을 탐색하였다. S대학 무전공 입학생 25명을 대상으로 서면 인터뷰를 진행하여 다중 사례 연구를 수행하고, 이를 주제 분석 기법으로 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 다음과 같은 결과와 결론을 도출하였다. 결과 첫째, 학생들은 자율전공 제도의 도입 취지대로 전공 탐색의 기회를 가질 수 있다는 점을 무전공 입학의 장점으로 꼽았다. 하지만 한편으로는 학과에 소속되지 않아 관계성 약화의 문제를 겪고 있는 것으로 파악되어 관련 제도를 보완할 필요가 있다는 점이 드러났다. 둘째, 무전공 입학생의 수강 기준에서 교양과 전공 교과목 간 차이를 보였다. 교양과 전공과목 모두에서 ‘학습 편의성’과 ‘교수·수업 특성’이 확인되었지만, 교양 교과목에서는 ‘제도적 요건’이, 전공 교과목에서는 ‘전공 진입 가능성’이 중요한 기준으로 밝혀졌다. 이를 고려하여 무전공 제도 확대에 따른 교양과 전공 교육과정 개편 전략을 세울 필요가 있을 것이다. 셋째, 무전공생의 전공 선택에 영향을 주는 요인으로 흥미와 진로 및 취업 등 개인적 요소가 압도적임을 확인할 수 있었다. 이를 고려한다면, 개인적 요소와 결부하여 무전공 학생들의 학사 및 진로 개발을 돕는 프로그램을 기획하고 실행할 필요가 있다. 결론 본 연구는 전공 탐색에 초점을 두고서 무전공(전공자율선택) 제도가 대학에서 실행될 때 교양과 전공, 교과와 비교과에서 고려되어야 할 점을 실증적인 연구를 바탕으로 제안하였다는 점에서 의의가 있다.

영문 초록

Objectives This study provides a historical overview of the introduction and current state of the undeclared major system in Korean universities, examining its limitations. It highlights the lack of empirical and systematic analysis regarding the factors influencing major selection among undeclared students. Methods To address this gap, this study explores the strengths and weaknesses of the undeclared major system, criteria for course registration in general education and major subjects, and criteria for selecting a major, focusing on undeclared students' perspectives. For this purpose, using a multiple case study approach, written interviews were conducted with 25 undeclared students at S University, and the data were analyzed through thematic analysis. Results The findings reveal three key points. First, students appreciate the opportunity to explore various majors, aligning with the intended goals of the system. However, they also face challenges in forming connections due to the lack of a departmental affiliation, highlighting the need for improvements. Second, undeclared students exhibit distinct preferences for general education and major courses; “learning convenience” and “instructor/course characteristics” influenced both, but “institutional requirements” were particularly significant for general education courses, while “major selection possibility” was crucial for major courses. These insights suggest strategies for curriculum reform in response to the expansion of the undeclared major system. Third, personal factors such as interest, career aspirations, and employment prospects overwhelmingly influence major selection, emphasizing the need for tailored academic and career development programs for undeclared students. Conclusions This study contributes to the field by offering empirical insights on curriculum and extracurricular considerations essential for implementing an undeclared major system focused on major exploration.
