이태원 참사 기사문의 비판적 담화 분석: 체계기능언어학의 평가어 이론에 기반하여

국문 초록

목적 본고의 목적은 ‘이태원 참사’에 관한 한겨레와 조선일보의 신문 기사문을 대상으로 비판적 담화 분석(Critical discourse analysis: CDA)을 시도해 보는 것이다. 방법 이러한 목적을 위해 본고는 최근 다양한 분야에서 텍스트 분석 방법론으로 원용되고 있는 체계기능언어학의 평가어 이론(Appraisal theory)을 신문 기사문의 비판적 담화 분석에 적용해 보았다. CDA는 언어와 권력, 사회의 상관관계를 중점적으로 다루며, 텍스트 분석이 단순한 표면적 의미에 머무르지 않고 그 이면에 존재하는 권력 구조와 사회적 맥락 의미를 심층적으로 파악해야 한다고강조한다. 본 연구는 평가어 이론을 통해 한겨례와 조선일보의 기사, 칼럼, 사설에 나타나는 평가어 사용 실태를 분석하고, 각기 다른사회적 맥락에서 평가어가 어떻게 선택되고 사용되는지, 그리고 그것이 특정 정치적 맥락에 어떻게 활용되는지를 고찰하였다. 결과 이러한 비판적 담화 분석을 위해 우리는 이태원 참사 사건을 구성하는 주요 참가자, 즉 정부(여당), 야당, 경찰, 집회/시위, 참가시민별로 감정평가, 행위평가, 정황평가의 분석 결과를 재배치하였다. 그리고 이러한 재배치를 통해 어떤 평가자가 어떤 평가 대상을 긍정적으로 평가하고, 어떤 평가자가 어떤 평가 대상을 부정적으로 평가했는지를 알 수 있었고, 또 어떤 평가자가 특정 평가 영역에서만 한정적으로 평가되었는지를 확인할 수가 있었다. 그리고 이러한 분석 결과는 다시 두 신문사의 언어 외적/사회적 맥락(Level 3)이나 정치적/역사적 맥락(Level 4)과 필연적으로 연결되어 있다는 것도 확인할 수 있었다. 결론 이태원 참사에 관한 한겨레와 조선일보 신문 기사문의 평가어 분석을 통해 필자가 확인할 수 있는 것은 두 신문사가 양극단으로갈라져 있는 우리 사회를 거의 그대로 대변할 뿐, 사회의 갈등을 봉합하고 그것을 해결하려고 하는 노력을 하지 못한다는 것이다.

영문 초록

Objectives The purpose of this paper is to conduct a critical discourse analysis (CDA) on the newspaper articles of Hankyoreh and Chosun Ilbo about the ‘Itaewon tragedy.. Methods To this end, this paper applies the appraisal theory of systemic functional linguistics, which has recently been used as a methodology for text analysis in various fields, to the critical discourse analysis of newspaper articles. CDA focuses on the relationship between language, power, and society, and emphasizes that textual analysis should go beyond mere surface meanings to deeply understand the power structures and social con textual meanings behind them. This study analyzed the use of appraisal in articles, columns, and editorials in Hankyoreh and Chosun Ilbo through the theory of appraisal, and examined how appraisal is selected and used in different social contexts and how it is utilized in specific political contexts. Results For this critical discourse analysis, we rearranged the analysis results of Affect, Judgment, Appreciation by the main participants in the Itaewon tragedy: the government (ruling party), opposition, police, rallies/demon strations, and participating citizens. This rearrangement allowed us to see which evaluators positively evaluated which targets, which evaluators negatively evaluated which targets, and which evaluators were limited to certain areas of appraisal. We also found that the results of these analyses were inevitably linked to the extra-linguistic/social context (Level 3) and political/historical context (Level 4) of the two newspapers. Conclusions Through the analysis of appraisal in the Hankyoreh and Chosun Ilbo newspaper articles on the Itaewon tragedy, We can confirm that the two newspapers almost represent our society as it is, divided into two polarized groups, but they do not have the ability or willingness to bridge the gap and resolve the conflict in society.
