밑줄 긋기 단서 제공 유무에 따른 고등학생의 읽기 이해 차이

국문 초록

목적 본 연구는 밑줄 긋기 단서 제공 유무에 따른 고등학생의 읽기 이해 차이를 살펴보는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 통해 밑줄과 같은 텍스트 단서가 읽기 전략이 부족한 학생들의 읽기 이해에 도움을 줄 수 있는지를 알아보고, 학생들에게 친숙한 밑줄 긋기를 텍스트 단서로 활용하여 읽기 능력이 우수한 집단과 미숙한 집단의 읽기 격차를 줄이는 데 기여할 수 있는지를 알아보고자 한다. 방법 고등학생을 밑줄 긋기 단서 제공 유무에 따라 두 집단으로 나누어 읽기 이해 검사를 실시하였다. 설명문의 중심 문장에 밑줄을 그어 제공한 집단과 그렇지 않은 집단의 중심 내용 이해, 세부 내용 이해, 체감 난도에 대한 선다형 문항의 읽기 이해 검사를 수행하였다. 수집한 읽기 이해 검사 결과를 t-test, 효과 크기를 활용하여 분석하였다. 결과 첫째, 읽기 수준과 무관하게 밑줄 긋기 단서의 효과는 중심 내용 파악과 세부 내용 파악에서 모두 통계적으로 유의하지 않았다. 둘째, 읽기 수준 상 집단에서 중심 내용 파악과 세부 내용 파악에 대한 밑줄 긋기 단서의 효과가 통계적으로 유의하지 않았다. 읽기 수준 하 집단에서 중심 내용 파악에 대한 밑줄 긋기 단서의 효과가 통계적으로 유의하였고, 세부 내용 파악에 대한 밑줄 긋기 단서의 효과가 통계적으로 유의하지 않았다. 셋째, 읽기 수준과 무관하게 체감 난도에 미치는 밑줄 긋기 단서의 효과는 통계적으로 유의하지 않았다. 읽기 수준 상⋅하 각 집단에서 밑줄 유무에 따른 체감 난도의 차이 역시 통계적으로 유의하지 않았다. 결론 밑줄 긋기 단서는 읽기 수준 하 집단에서 중심 내용 파악에 통계적으로 유의한 효과가 있었다. 이는 읽기 부진 학생을 포함한 읽기가 미숙한 학생들에게 읽기 자료를 제시할 때 중심 문장에 밑줄을 그어 제공함으로써 중심 내용 파악에 도움을 줄 수 있음을 시사한다. 읽기의 핵심 목표는 중심 내용 파악이다. 읽기가 미숙한 학생들은 문장 중요도 평정 능력 또한 낮을 것으로 예상되므로 중심 문장에 밑줄을 그어 제공하면 중심 내용을 쉽게 파악할 수 있다. 밑줄 긋기 단서는 읽기 부진 학생을 포함한 읽기가 미숙한 학생들이 독립적인 읽기 활동으로 나아가는 과정을 지원할 수 있고, 읽기 능력이 우수한 집단과 미숙한 집단의 격차를 줄이는 데 기여할 수 있다.

영문 초록

Objectives This study examines the impact of underlining cues on reading comprehension among high school students, aiming to determine if such typographical cuing can aid students with limited reading strategies and reduce the reading gap between proficient and struggling readers. Methods This study conducted a reading comprehension test on high school students, dividing them into two groups based on the presence or absence of underlining cues. One group was provided with expository texts where the main sentences were underlined, while the other group received the same texts without underlining. The reading comprehension test consisted of multiple-choice questions assessing understanding of main ideas, detailed content, and perceived difficulty. The collected test results were analyzed using t-tests and effect size measurements. Results First, the effect of underlining cues was not statistically significant for both main idea comprehension and detail comprehension, regardless of reading proficiency levels. Second, in the high-level reading group, the effect of underlining cues on both main idea and detail comprehension was not statistically significant. However, in the low-level reading group, the effect of underlining cues on main idea comprehension was statistically significant, while it was not significant for detail comprehension. Third, the effect of underlining cues on perceived difficulty was not statistically significant, regardless of reading level. Similarly, there was no statistically significant difference in perceived difficulty between the presence and absence of underlining within both the higher- and lower-level groups. Conclusions Underlining cues significantly aided low-level readers in identifying main ideas, suggesting that providing underlined topic sentences in reading materials can support students with low reading ability, including those struggling with reading. This approach may help bridge the gap between proficient and low reading ability, supporting their progress towards independent reading.
