국문 초록

목적 본 연구의 목적은 제주의 교육적, 사회적 맥락을 고려한 영어학습자의 투자구성(investment construction)을 탐구하기 위한 것이다. 특히 본 연구는 제주의 다양한 영어학습 맥락에서 영어학습자가 어떻게 포지션(position)이 되고 있는지, 그리고 영어학습에 대한 투자가 그들의 포지션에 따라 어떻게 변화할 수 있는지를 분석하기 위한 것이다. 방법 영어학습 과정에서 나타나는 투자구성을 연구하기 위하여 후기구조주의 개념인 포지션(position)과 투자(investment)를 활용하여 3명의 참여자들의 저널쓰기와 인터뷰 자료를 분석하였다. 결과 다양한 학습 맥락에서 참여자들의 소외된 포지션(marginalized position)은 영어학습에 대한 투자를 제약할 수 있음을 보여준다. 특히 제주의 영어 교육은 인문계 고등학교 진학을 위한 학생들의 영어 점수 향상에 초점을 맞추고 있지만, 이러한 단기적인 관심사는 더욱 신중하게 고려해야 한다. 어린 시절부터 다양한 시험에서 영어 점수를 강조하는 것은 학생들의 영어학습 투자에 부정적인 영향을 미칠 수 있는 것으로 분석되었다. 결론 영어학습자의 소외된 포지션은 영어학습에 대한 투자에 영향을 미칠 수 있으므로 영어학습 활동을 검토하고 학생들을 소외시킬 수 있는 활동 유형을 파악하는 것이 중요하다. 본 연구는 영어학습 활동을 검토하고 보완하는 것이 학생들이 영어학습에 대한 투자를 촉진하는 더 강력한 포지션을 채택하는 데 도움이 될 것이라는 점에서 의의가 있다.

영문 초록

Objectives This study aims to explore English learners’ investment constructions considering the educational and social contexts of Jeju. In particular, this study examines how English learners are positioned in various English learning contexts in Jeju and how their investments in learning English can change depending on their positions. Methods Data from three participants’ interviews and journal writings were analyzed to examine their investment constructions in the process of learning English using the poststructuralist concept of positions and investment. Results This study shows that the participants’ marginalized positions in various learning contexts may constrain their investments in learning English. In particular, English education in Jeju has focused on improving students’ English scores to enter academic high schools, but such short-term interests should be more carefully considered. To emphasize English scores on various tests from childhood may negatively affect students’ investments in learning English. Conclusions English learners’ marginalized positions can influence their investments in learning English, so it is important to review English learning activities and identify the types of activities that may marginalize students. This study is significant because reviewing and complementing English learning activities will help students adopt more powerful positions which promote their investments in learning English.
