영문 초록

This paper purports to make a prediction about the upcoming readjustment in U.S. policy toward North Korea. Which was caused in major part by incidents involving North Korea`s suspect nuclear site and the firing of long range missile (or multistaged rocket) in 1998. Considering North Korea`s potential to disrupt the status quo in East Asia, which has served well the U.S. national security objectives in the post Cold-War era, and its increasing strategic value, this paper suggests that the U.S. is expected to come up with a comprehensive package deal, once again, which would require North Korea to address and eliminate the totality of its security threat while ensuring its soft landing and survival as a sovereign state. Based on this prediction, a number of policy implications for South Korean government are discussed.
