리투아니아 전통종교 로무바(Romuva)와 요례(Jorė) 축제 연구

국문 초록

본고는 오늘날 아직 토착 전통종교 신앙을 지키면서 현대 사회와의 공존과 조화를 꿈꾸는 리투아니아의 토착 전통종교 집단인 로무바(Romuva) 와 그들의 대표적 이교도 축제인 요례(Jorė) 축제를 소개하고, 이를 통해 다종교 사회인 우리가 복원해 내고 지켜 나가야 할 가치와 대상이 무엇인지 고구해 보고자 했다. 로무바는 발트 해 연안에 인접한 국가들, 즉 리투아니아와 라트비아, 옛 프러시아, 벨로루시 일대에 전해 내려오던 전통종교를 가리킨다. 리투아니아 인들은 14세기에 폴란드를 통해 기독교를 유럽에서 가장 늦게 받아들인 이후, 그들이 믿던 고유한 신앙을 이교(異敎) 로 치부해 버리고 배척했다. 그런데 그 전통종교는 기독교의 탄압 속에서도 살아남아 오늘날까지 그 전통을 유지해 오고 있다. 로무바인들은 천둥(번개)의 신이자 리투아니아 최고의 신인 페르쿠나스(Perkunas)를 중심으로 물레질을 하며 운명을 관장하는 신인 라이마(Laima), 대지의 여신인 제미나(Žemyna), 불의 여신인 가비야(Gabija) 등을 믿는다. 이들은 요례 축제와 같은 이교도 축제를 열어 리투아니아 전통 이교도 종교의식을 재현하고, 전통종교 체험을 하게 함으로써 민족혼을 고취시키고, 나아가 서로 하나 되는 시간을 갖는다. 요례 축제는 종교 행사라기보다 이교도 신앙을 복원, 전통 문화를 재창조하는 한편, 민족공동체의 일원이 되기 위한 화합과 조화의 장임을 강조한다. 그리고 이들이 축제 현장에서 부르는 다양한 민요는 로무바 신화의 출처가 된다. 다이노(Daino) 라고 총칭하는 이 민요를 부르면서 신을 노래하고, 신앙심을 다지고 신자 간 일체감과 공동체 의식을 형성하며, 거기서 신과 인간의 조화, 자연과 인간의 조화를 추구한다. 이러한 민요는 라트비아를 비롯한 발트 지역에서 광범위하게 불리고 있어 발트인이 신령하게 여기는 경전(holy text)과도 같다. 민족적 자존감을 높이고 자기 정체성을 형성하는 데 큰 영향을 미쳤다. 로무바 신앙과 요례 축제에 나타난 주요 정신은 결국 자연과 인간의 조화, 그리고 공동체의 단결과 번영에 있다 할 것이다. 외래종교에 대항해 고유한 전통종교를 지켜나가려는 로무바인들의 신앙과 종교관이 공동체 축제의 장에서 그들의 신화가 담겨 있는 전통 민요 다이노를 부르며 의미를 찾고자 하는 것처럼, 우리의 경우도 축제의 장인 마을 굿에서 무당이 부르는 서사무가를 통해 신과 인간이 만나고 그 시원(始原)의 고유한 사상을 드러내며 현대인과의 조화와 공생을 추구할 필요가 있다. 또한 리투아니아들이 전하는 로무바 신화와 그들의 축제 문화는 그리스ㆍ로마 신화와 성경으로 대표되는 유럽 내 특권적 지위를 부정하고 제3세계 시각에서 자신들의 고유한 종교관과 신화를 재생산해 나가려 한다는 점에서 시사하는 바가 적지 않다.

영문 초록

This paper is purposed to introduce the native traditional religion of Lithuania Romuva and their typical pagan festival Jorė. Through these, I am going to investigate what we should restore and keep in multifaith society. Romuva means traditional religion which handed down for a long time in the Baltic countries, namely Lithuania and Latvia, the old Prussian, Belarus. Although people of Poland and Lithuania accepted Christianity late in Europe in the 14th century, Romuva has continued to believe in their own faith heresy, and they rejected Christianity. However, despite the oppression of the Christian religion, the tradition survived and has maintained to this day. Romuva believes in Perkunas-the giver of nature s living and creative powers ; in Laima-the goddess of the fate of all men ; in Žemyna- the goddess of earth, birth, growth, and ripening ; in Gabija-the goddess of fire, of the hearth, protector of the family and the etc.. Romuvian are held on the pagan festival Jorė on the last weekend in April. Festival Jorė reproduces traditional pagan ritual and encourages traditional patriotic spirit by religious experience. Jorė pagan festival is like a filed which members of ethnic communities restore and recreate the traditional culture, and become emphasizes unity and harmony rather than religious ritual. It is interesting that various folk songs are sang in the festival field is the source of the Romuva myth. A vast treasury of Lithuanian folk music called by Daino has been oral tradition for 1000 years. The songs unite one generation with the nest and preserve the wisdom of the Ancestors, their understanding of beauty and morality. While singing, a person communicates with the gods, with trees, birds, the stars. The Daino has always been an important means of spiritual expression for the Balts. In a sense the dainos (pl.) can be considered as the principal Holy Text of the Balts. The major festivals Jorė of Romuva emphasize spirit of harmony between nature and human beings after all, and the unity and prosperity of the community. The relation between Lithuanian traditional religion Romuva and their festival Jorė is similar that Korean shamanistic rite Gut and its village festival village-gut ; both are pursue to keep in harmony and coexistence with modern people. That is why we must be interested in searching the meaning between traditional religion like Romuva or Gut and its festival in a perspective of the third world in Multifaith society.
