교육학 연구를 위한 문화기술지 연구방법 활용 탐색

국문 초록

목적 문화기술지의 이론적 토대를 검토하고 교육학연구에서 문화기술지 연구방법이 어떻게 활용된고 있는지 체계적으로 탐색하고자 했다. 방법 이를 위하여 Spradley(1980)가 제시한 문화기술지의 분석방법을 검토하고, 이 분석방법이 확장될 수 있는 이론으로써 상징적 상호작용, 근거이론, 민속방법론, 비판이론을 제시하였다. 이 4가지 이론을 교육학에서의 문화기술지 활용을 정리할 구조로 제시하였다. 결과 문화기술지의 교육학적 활용을 검토하기 위해 4가지 이론을 토대로 하는 연구를 상징적 상호작용에서 6개, 민속방법론에서 5개, 근거이론에서 5개, 비판이론에서 5개를 선정하였으며, 각 연구들이 해당 이론을 통해 어떻게 교육학적 의미를 발견하는지를 탐색해 보았다. 결론 교육학 연구에서의 문화기술지를 4가지 이론을 통해 확인해 가는 과정을 통해 첫째, 이론의 언급없이 기술되고, 분석 및 해석된 문화기술지의 연구내용에 다양한 이론이 전제되어 있음을 봤고, 둘째, 그러한 문화기술지의 네 가지 이론으로서 상징적 상호작용, 근거이론, 민속방법론, 비판이론을 제시해 볼 수 있었다. 셋째, 이러한 교육학 연구의 이론적 토대를 발견함으로써, 교육학에서의 문화기술지가 가질 수 있는 엄밀성을 제고할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.

영문 초록

Objectives This study aimed to examine the theoretical foundations of ethnography and to systematically explore how ethnographic research methods have been applied in the field of educational research. Methods To achieve this, the study examines the analytical methods of ethnography proposed by Spradley (1980) and expands upon these methods by incorporating four theoretical frameworks: symbolic interactionism, grounded theory, ethnomethodology, and critical theory. These four theories are presented as a structural framework for organizing the application of ethnography in educational research. Results To examine the application of ethnography in educational research, this study selected six studies based on symbolic interactionism, five based on ethnomethodology, five based on grounded theory, and five based on critical theory. Each study was analyzed to explore how it discovers educational meanings through the respective theoretical lens. Conclusions Through an examination of ethnography in educational research using these four theoretical frameworks, three key findings emerge. First, ethnographic studies often involve implicit theoretical foundations, even when theories are not explicitly mentioned in descriptions, analyses, and interpretations. Second, symbolic interactionism, grounded theory, ethnomethodology, and critical theory can serve as essential theoretical perspectives for analyzing ethnographic research in education. Third, identifying these theoretical foundations enhances the rigor of ethnographic research in educational studies, strengthening its methodological precision and academic validity.
