국문 초록

목적 본 연구는 학술지에 발표된 방탈출 연구들에 대한 서지분석을 통해 방탈출이 혁신교수법으로서 언제부터 도입되어 어떻게 활용되고 있는지 등에 대한 전반적인 연구 추세를 살펴보고자 수행되었다. 방법 검색은 2024년 7월 19일에 Web of Science Core Collection 데이터베이스를 사용하여 수행되었다. 검색어 “escape room”과 “room escape”는 “All category”로 설정하였고, 기간 제한은 두지 않았으며, 검색 영역은 “All fields”로 제목, 초록, 저자 키워드 및 Keyword Plus를 포함하였다. 중복은 Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs)를 사용하여 식별하고 제거하였으며, 최종적으로 715개의 문헌이 분석에 포함되었다. 서지 분석은 오픈소스 소프트웨어인 Bibliometrix R 패키지를 사용하여 수행하였으며, 연도별 논문 수, 최다 출판 저널, 최다 논문 저자, 국가별 및 기관별 논문 생산 현황, 인용 횟수, 저자 키워드 및 키워드 플러스를 분석하였다. 결과 방탈출 연구는 2016년부터 발표되었고 검색일까지 발표된 715개의 문헌 중 2021년에 146편으로 최다 발표되었고, 이후 소폭 감소되었다(The annual growth rate 38.23%, p=0.3125). 최다 출판 저널은 “Journal of Chemical Education”으로 24편을 출판하였고., 최다 논문수를 기록한 연구자는 스페인의 Gordillo A이며, 최다 인용수를 나타낸 연구자는 미국의 Eukel HN이다, 제1저자로 등장하는 다저자 논문 비율을 고려하는 저자 지배력(Dominance Factor)에서 1위는 호주의 Moore L로 나타났다. 최다 연구 국가는 미국, 스페인, 영국 순이었고, 저자 소속 기관 상위 20개 중 8개 기관이 스페인 소재 대학으로 나타났다. 키워드 분석 관련하여 Keyword plus에는 “Game”, “Students”, Author Keyword에는 “Escape room”, “Gamification” 순으로 많이 사용되었다. 피인용수 상위 논문 1위는 Eukel 등(2017)의 연구로 나타났다. 가장 많이 인용된 논문은 총 169회 인용된 Eukel, Frenzel, 그리고 Cernusca가 2017년에 발표한 “Educational Gaming for Pharmacy Students: Design and Evaluation of a Diabetes-Themed Escape Room”이다. 결론 본 방탈출 관련 연구의 서지정보 분석을 통해 학문적으로 활용된 방탈출 연구의 경향성을 다각도에서 파악하였으며, 이는 혁신교수법의 발전을 위한 방향성을 제시하는 데 도움이 될 것이다.

영문 초록

Objectives This study examined the evolution and trends in escape room research as an innovative teaching method, with a focus on its inception, utilization, and application within educational settings. Methods The search was conducted on July 19, 2024, using the Web of Science Core Collection database. The search terms “escape room” and “room escape” were applied in the “All category” field, with no time span limitations. The search area was set to “All fields,” encompassing titles, abstracts, author keywords, and keyword plus. Duplicates were identified and removed using Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs), resulting in a final dataset of 715 documents. Bibliometric analysis of these 715 documents was performed using the open-source Bibliometrix R package. The analysis covered the number of papers published by year, the most frequently published journals, the most prolific authors, paper production by country and institution, citation counts, and keywords. Results Escape room research has been published since 2016, and among the 715 documents published by the search date, the highest number of publications occurred in 2021, with 146 papers, followed by a slight decline thereafter (annual growth rate: 38.23%, p = 0.3125). The journal with the most publications was the Journal of Chemical Education, with 24 articles published. The author with the highest number of papers was Gordillo A from Spain, while the most cited author was Eukel HN from the United States. In terms of author dominance, calculated based on the ratio of first-author papers, the leading researcher was Moore L from Australia. The United States, Spain, and the United Kingdom were the top countries in escape room research, and among the top 20 affiliated institutions, 8 were universities in Spain. Regarding keyword analysis, “Game” and “Students” were the most frequently used terms in Keyword Plus, while “Escape room” and “Gamification” were the most commonly used in Author Keywords. The most frequently cited paper, with a total of 169 citations, was “Educational Gaming for Pharmacy Students: Design and Evaluation of a Diabetes-Themed Escape Room,” authored by Eukel, Frenzel, and Cernusca in 2017. Conclusions This bibliometric analysis offers a detailed overview of the trajectory and scope of escape room research in education. The findings elucidate trends that may support the further development and refinement of innovative teaching methodologies.
