국문 초록

조나단 글레이저 감독의 영화 <존 오브 인터레스트>는 시청각의 차단, 비-스펙터클 전략, 감각의 불균형을 통해 관객에게 지속적인 불편함과 도덕적 긴장을 유발하였다. 본 논문은 이 작품이 단순히 감정을 유도하거나 몰입을 차단하는 수준을 넘어, 정동이 발생할 수 있는 감각적 기반 자체를 구조적으로 차단함을 분석하였다. 작품에서재현되는 정원, 담장, 열화상 이미지, 반복되는 사운드 등은 모두 비가시적 폭력을 일상성과 병치시키며, 관객을 감각적 불균형과 지각적 불안정 상태로 몰아넣었다. 이러한 감각의 병치와 지연은 윤리적 판단을 유예시키며, 영화는 이를 통해 신체적 반응으로서의 정동, 시선의 불안정성, 공간적 감각성이 교차하는 윤리적 지각 구조를 구성하였다. 본 논문은 <존 오브 인터레스트>를 통해 감각의 구조가 윤리의 구조로 어떻게 전이될 수 있는지를 고찰함으로써, 시네마의 감각 정치에 대한 새로운 해석을 제안하였다. 더 나아가 본 연구는 선행연구가 주로 강조해온 ‘정동의 발현’이나 ‘윤리적각성’의 가능성에서 벗어나, 오히려 정동이 체계적으로 봉쇄되는 구조적 조건을 규명하였다. 이를 통해 영화가 단순히 과거의 폭력을 재현하는 것이 아니라, 오늘날 관객이 놓여 있는 감각적·윤리적 위기의 조건을 드러낸다는 점을 밝혔다. 나아가 본 연구는 아렌트, 지젝, 바우만, 마수미의 이론을 접합하여 감각 윤리에 관한 비판적 논의를확장함으로써, 현대 시네마가 제기하는 윤리적 무감각화 메커니즘을 분석하는 새로운지평을 열고자 하였다.

영문 초록

Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest employed strategies of audiovisual blockage, anti-spectacle, and sensory imbalance to evoke persistent discomfort and moral tension in the audience. This study analyzed how the film went beyond merely inducing emotions or interrupting immersion, revealing instead a structural blockage of the very sensory foundations upon which affect could arise. Elements such as the garden, the wall, thermal images, and recurring sounds juxtaposed invisible violence with everyday life, pushing the audience into a state of sensory imbalance and perceptual instability. Such juxtapositions and delays suspended ethical judgment, and the film thereby constructed an ethical perceptual structure in which bodily affect, unstable gaze, and spatial sensibility intersected. By examining The Zone of Interest in this way, this study considered how the structure of sensation could be transferred into the structure of ethics, thereby offering a new interpretation of the politics of cinematic sensation. Furthermore, the study identified a key difference from prior scholarship, which often emphasized the activation of affect and ethical awakening: this research demonstrated instead how affect was systematically blocked, resulting in a structure of ethical numbness. In doing so, it revealed that the film did not simply reproduce past violence but illuminated the conditions of contemporary sensory and ethical crisis. By integrating the theories of Hannah Arendt, Slavoj Žižek, Zygmunt Bauman, and Brian Massumi, the analysis also expanded the critical discourse on sensory ethics, opening a new perspective on how modern cinema exposes the mechanisms of ethical desensitization.
