시리즈 <정년이>의 해외 팬 반응을 통한 글로벌 문화 현상 연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 웹툰 기반 드라마 <정년이>를 중심으로, 한국 콘텐츠 산업의 미디어믹스 전략과 그 콘텐츠가 해외 팬덤에게 수용되는 양상을 분석한다. ‘웹소설–웹툰–드라마’로 이어지는 제작 사이클이 한국 콘텐츠 산업 내에서 어떻게 표준화되었는지를 살펴보고, 여성국극이라는 특수한 소재를 다루는 <정년이>의 각색 과정과 그 사회문화적 함의를 검토한다. 또한, 드라마에 반영된 여성 공동체, 젠더 재현, 전통 예술 재현이 어떻게 글로벌 수용자에게 해석되고 소비되는지를 분석한다. 이를 위해 IMDb, Reddit 등 영어권 디지털 사이트에 기록된 팬덤의 수용 반응을 실증적으로 분석하며, 문화적 할인(cultural discount) 이론과 수용자의 해석 전략을 교차 검토한다. <정년이>를 접하는 해외 수용자들은 낯선 전통문화에서 이해의 장벽을 경험하지만, 동시에이를 새로운 매력과 가치로 수용하는 면이 나타났다. 본고는 문화적 할인보다는 ‘문화적 프리미엄(cultural premium)’의 양상이 두드러지게 나타나고 있다는 점에 주목한다. 본 연구는 <정년이> 사례를 통해 K콘텐츠가 로컬성과 글로벌성이 교차하는 문화적 인터페이스로 기능하고 있음을 살펴보며, 캐릭터 중심의 미디어믹스 전략이 콘텐츠 산업의 재생산 메커니즘으로 자리 잡고 있음을 규명한다.

영문 초록

This study analyzes the media-mix strategies of the Korean content industry and the ways in which webtoon-based drama Jeongnyeon: The Star is Born has been received by international fandom. It examines how the production cycle of “web novel–webtoon–drama” has become standardized within the Korean content industry, while also considering the adaptation process of Jeongnyeon, which employs the unique subject matter of women’s gukgeuk (all-female musical theatre), and its socio-cultural implications. In particular, the study investigates how the drama’s representations of women’s communities, gender, and traditional performing arts are interpreted and consumed by global audiences. To this end, empirical analysis is conducted on fan responses documented on English-language digital platforms such as IMDb and Reddit, engaging with the framework of cultural discount and interpretive strategies of audiences. The findings reveal that although overseas viewers occasionally encounter barriers in understanding unfamiliar Korean traditional culture, they simultaneously embrace these elements as sources of novelty and value. Consequently, rather than cultural discount, the dynamics of “cultural premium” emerge more prominently. Furthermore, the star persona of lead actress Kim Tae-ri functions as a decisive mediating factor in reception, overriding cultural distance as a key driver of engagement. By situating Jeongnyeon as a case study, this article argues that K-content operates as a cultural interface where the local and the global intersect, and that character-centered media-mix strategies have become a core mechanism for the reproduction and circulation of content within the industry.
