국문 초록

디지털 시각효과 기술이 영화 제작의 표준으로 자리 잡은 이후, 일부 할리우드 블록버스터는 오히려 아날로그적 연출 방식과 물리적 실재성을 전면화하는 스펙터클 전략을 선택하고 있다. 본 연구는 이러한 경향이 단순히 복고주의나 스타일적 유행이아니라, 디지털 이미지의 과잉 속에서 극장 영화의 고유한 가치를 재정의하려는 산업적·미학적 전략으로 바라본다. 톰 크루즈 주연·제작의 <미션임파서블: 폴아웃>을 통해서 실제 배우의 신체적 수행과 이러한 제작과정을 마케팅 요소로 활용하여 사실성을 구축하는 방식을 분석한다. 같은 맥락에서 <탑건: 매버릭>을 디지털 기술이 지배하는 영화 산업 환경에서 아날로그적 영화 만들기의 의미와 가치를 질문하는 메타텍스트로 해석한다. 또한, 크리스토퍼 놀란 감독의 작품들을 통해서는 IMAX 필름과물리적 효과를 활용하여 매체의 물질성을 부각하고 극장 경험을 강화하는 방식을 짚는다. 본 연구는 이처럼 디지털 시대에 부상한 아날로그 스펙터클을 할리우드의 의미있는 산업적 징후로 독해함으로써, 주로 흥행 중심의 산물로 평가되던 블록버스터가당대 미디어 환경에 민감하게 반응하는 미학적 장이라는 점을 환기시키는 데 의의가있다.

영문 초록

In an era where digital visual effects (VFX) have become the standard in filmmaking, a notable trend has emerged in select Hollywood blockbusters: a strategic emphasis on analog directorial methods and physical reality in their spectacle. This study posits that this trend is not merely a manifestation of retroism or a stylistic fad, but an industrial and aesthetic strategy to redefine the intrinsic value of theatrical cinema amidst an overabundance of digital imagery. Through an analysis of Mission: Impossible – Fallout, starring and produced by Tom Cruise, this paper examines how the physical performance of the actor and the promotion of its production process are utilized as marketing tools to construct a sense of authenticity. In the same vein, it interprets Top Gun: Maverick as a meta-text that questions the meaning and value of analog filmmaking within a film industry dominated by digital technology. Furthermore, the study investigates the works of director Christopher Nolan, focusing on his use of IMAX film and practical effects to accentuate the medium’s materiality and enhance the theatrical experience. By interpreting this rise of analog spectacle in the digital age as a significant industrial symptom in Hollywood, this research aims to highlight that the blockbuster—often primarily assessed as a commercial product—is in fact an aesthetic field that responds sensitively to the contemporary media environment.
