본 논문은 크리스 마르케르의 영화 『태양 없이』(Sans Soleil, 1982)에 나타난 아이형상의 마이너리티적 성격을 분석하고, 이 영화가 아이의 형상을 통해 20세기의 재난을 재현하는 방식을 고찰한다. 영화 속에서 아이들은 아이슬란드, 일본, 기니 비사우처럼 재난의 기억을 가지고 있는 매 장소에 출현한다. 본 논문은 『태양 없이』가 아이들의 형상을 통해 재난을 경험한 공동체의 집합 기억을 재현하고 있다는 가설을 제안한다. 마르케르의 영화에서 여러 지역의 아이들은 행복과 재난, 유년과 죽음이 중첩된복합적 이미지로 제시된다. 아이들은 재난의 피해자인 동시에 놀이를 통해 역사적 기억을 전달하는 존재다. 본 연구는 특히 프롤로그에 등장한 후 영화 종반부에 재등장하는 아이슬란드 아이들의 이미지의 몽타주를 상세하게 분석하면서 아이 형상의 의미를 탐색한다. 비판적 민속지학적 관점과 숭고론에 기반하여 아이의 형상을 연구한 기존 분석의 한계를 검토하면서 본 연구는 『태양 없이』의 아이가 초역사적 행복을 의미하는 형상으로 출현하는 것이 아니라, 재난을 잠재적으로 표현하는 발터 벤야민적 의미에서의 역사 이미지의 형상임을 밝혔다. 이를 통해 본 논문은 아시아와 아프리카라는 타자를 기록한 다큐멘터리인 <태양 없이>가 전통적인 민속지학적 역사 재현의 서구 중심적 관점을 극복하고 새로운 영화적 기억 형식을 모색한다고 주장한다. 본 연구는 후속 연구로 영화에 등장하는 아프리카 기니 비사우 여성 이미지를 아이 이미지와의 연관 속에서 분석할 필요성을 제안한다.

영문 초록

This article analyzes the minoritarian character of the child figure in Chris Marker’s Sans Soleil (1982) and examines how the film represents the disasters of the twentieth century through that figure. In the film, children appear in every place marked by memories of catastrophe—such as Iceland, Japan, and Guinea-Bissau. The article advances the hypothesis that Sans Soleil reconstitutes the collective memory of disaster-stricken communities through the figures of children. Across regions, Marker presents children as complex images in which happiness and disaster, childhood and death, are densely superimposed. Children are not only victims of catastrophe but also agents who transmit historical memory through play. Focusing on a detailed analysis of the montage of Icelandic children who appear in the prologue and reappear near the end of the film, the study probes the meanings of the child figure. Revisiting the limits of prior readings grounded in critical ethnography and theories of the sublime, I argue that the child in Sans Soleil does not signify a transhistorical happiness; rather, it emerges as a Benjaminian “image of history” that potentially expresses disaster. In doing so, the article contends that Sans Soleil—a documentary that documents encounters with Asia and Africa, long positioned as “the Other” in Western ethnographic discourse—overcomes the Eurocentric perspective of traditional ethnographic historiography and explores a new cinematic form of memory. The study concludes by calling for subsequent research on the film’s images of women in Guinea-Bissau in relation to the images of children.
