국문 초록

본 연구는 픽사 애니메이션의 세계관 변주를 서사적 공간 확장의 관점에서 고찰한다. 픽사 애니메이션은 캐릭터 중심의 서사와 디지털 기술의 융합을 통해 기존의 애니메이션 문법을 넘어서는 새로운 스토리텔링 전략을 선보이며, 애니메이션 산업의패러다임 변화를 주도해왔다. 픽사의 초기 작품들은 현실 세계를 기반으로 한 일상적공간에 상상력을 접목하여 관객에게 익숙하면서도 이질적인 감각을 제공하였으며, 이를 통해 기술적 혁신과 함께 새로운 시각적 경험을 만들어냈다. 그러나 <인사이드 아웃>(2015)을 기점으로 픽사의 서사 공간은 심리적, 초자연적, 철학적 차원으로 확장되었고, 이는 단순한 배경 설정을 넘어 서사의 핵심 동력으로 작용하고 있다. 최근의픽사 애니메이션 작품들인 <인사이드 아웃>, <코코>, <소울>, <엘리멘탈> 등은 각각감정, 사후세계, 영혼, 자연 요소라는 독특한 소재와 공간을 통해 서사의 폭을 확장한다. 이 작품들은 기존의 판타지적 설정이나 단순한 모험담을 넘어서 인간 내면의 심리, 정체성, 존재의 의미와 같은 복합적이고 성찰적인 주제를 다루며 성인 관객까지아우르는 포괄적인 스토리텔링을 실현한다. 본 연구는 픽사 애니메이션의 공간이 단순히 시각적 배경에 머물지 않고 캐릭터의 정체성과 주제의 전달, 그리고 관객의 감정적 몰입을 유도하는 서사적 공간으로 기능하고 있음을 강조한다. 특히 공간의 성격화와 확장은 이야기의 전개, 갈등의 구축, 플롯의 발전에 결정적인 역할을 하며, 이는스토리텔링 전략의 핵심 요소로 작용한다. 또한 본 연구는 픽사의 세계관과 공간의변화를 통해 애니메이션 장르의 경계가 확장되고 관객층의 다변화가 이루어지는 양상을 분석한다. 이러한 변화는 공간을 단순한 배경으로 소비하는 기존의 관습에서 벗어나, 공간 그 자체가 서사의 한 축이 되어 사건의 전개와 캐릭터의 변화, 주제의 전달에 밀접하게 연결되도록 한다. 나아가 픽사 애니메이션은 다양한 문화적 전통과 가치를 반영한 공간의 설정을 통해 문화적 포용성과 글로벌 관객의 공감대를 형성하는 전략도 강화하고 있다. 본 연구는 이러한 서사적 공간 확장의 전략이 픽사의 스토리텔링 방식에 어떻게 작동하는지 분석함으로써 픽사 애니메이션이 기술적 혁신, 창의적공간 설계, 성찰적 주제의식을 결합하여 기존의 전형적 가족용 애니메이션의 틀을 넘어서는 새로운 서사적 가능성을 지속적으로 확장하고 있음을 주장한다.

영문 초록

This study examines the variations in the narrative universe of Pixar Animation from the perspective of narrative space expansion. Pixar has pioneered a new paradigm in the animation industry by presenting innovative storytelling strategies that combine character-centered narratives with digital technology, thereby transcending conventional animation grammar. Pixar’s early works incorporated imagination into everyday spaces based on the real world, giving the audience a familiar yet heterogeneous sense. Through this, new visual experiences were created along with technological innovation. However, starting with Inside Out (2015), Pixar’s narrative space has expanded to psychological, paranormal, and philosophical dimensions. These spaces function not merely as settings but as core narrative drivers. Recent works such as Inside Out, Coco (2018), Soul (2021), and Elemental (2023) employ unique narrative spaces—emotions, the afterlife, the soul, and natural elements—to broaden the scope of storytelling. Beyond fantasy and adventure, these films engage with complex and reflective themes such as human psychology, identity, and the meaning of existence, thereby appealing to both children and adult audiences. This study argues that Pixar’s narrative spaces operate as more than visual backgrounds; they play decisive roles in shaping character identity, advancing plot development, and conveying thematic messages while eliciting audience immersion. The characterization and expansion of space serve as key storytelling strategies that construct conflict and drive narrative progression. Moreover, the transformation of Pixar’s world-building and spatial design illustrates how the boundaries of the animation genre have expanded, fostering audience diversification. In particular, Pixar reinforces cultural inclusivity and generates global resonance by embedding diverse cultural traditions and values within its narrative spaces. Through an analysis of these strategies, this study demonstrates how Pixar integrates technological innovation, creative spatial design, and reflective thematic concerns to transcend the conventions of family-oriented animation, continually opening new possibilities for narrative storytelling.
