국문 초록

본 연구는 영화 속 인서트 쇼트(insert shot)가 전통적으로 내러티브를 보조하는 기능적 장치에 국한되지 않고, 이미지의 자율성과 감각적 층위를 구성하는 ‘과잉(excessive)’적 가능성을 탐색하는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 크리스틴 톰슨(Kristin Thompson)의 ‘영화적 과잉(cinematic excess)’ 개념을 중심으로, 내러티브와 독립적 으로 작동하는 인서트 쇼트의 시간성 및 물질적 현존을 분석하였다. 기존 연구들이과잉을 스타일, 장르, 철학적 맥락 등 추상적 차원에서 논의했지만, 본 연구는 로베르브레송(Robert Bresson)의 <소매치기>(Pickpocket, 1959) 사례를 통해 인서트 쇼트의 구체적 편집 형식과 지속 시간, 반복적 리듬을 중심으로 실증적 분석을 수행하였다. 브레송의 인서트 쇼트는 서사의 긴장을 강화하거나 해소하는 기능적 도구에 머무르지 않고, 관객의 시선과 지각을 특정 대상에 집중시키며 시간의 흐름을 잠시 정지시키는 ‘과잉된 시간(excessive temporality)’을 생성함이 확인되었다. 이러한 순간은이미지 자체의 질감과 물질성을 경험하게 하고, 내러티브와 독립된 미학적 층위를 제공함으로써 영화적 의미의 다층성을 확장한다. 본 연구는 인서트 쇼트를 내러티브 보조 장치에서 벗어나 이미지의 자율성과 감각적 경험을 드러내는 영화적 순간으로 재해석함으로써, 영화 스타일과 편집 연구의 새로운 지평을 제시한다.

영문 초록

This study aims to explore the “excessive” potential of insert shots in cinema, emphasizing their autonomy and sensory layers rather than their traditional function as mere narrative aids. Drawing on Kristin Thompson’s concept of cinematic excess, it analyzes the temporality and material presence of insert shots that operate independently of narrative progression. While previous studies have discussed excess in abstract terms such as style, genre, or philosophical context, this research conducts an empirical analysis of Robert Bresson’s Pickpocket(1959), focusing on specific editing patterns, shot duration, and repetitive rhythms. The analysis demonstrates that Bresson’s insert shots do not merely serve to heighten or resolve narrative tension but instead concentrate the viewer’s gaze on particular objects and momentarily suspend the flow of time, producing an “excessive temporality.” Such moments allow the audience to experience the texture and materiality of the image itself, offering an aesthetic layer independent of narrative and thereby expanding the multilayered meaning of the film. By reinterpreting insert shots as cinematic moments that reveal image autonomy and sensory experience rather than as narrative devices, this study proposes a new perspective for the study of film style and editing.
