현대 사회에 있어 관례(성년식) 필요성에 대한 고찰 : 책임의식 등 인성교육 프로그램 개발 제언

국문 초록

본 연구는 현대 사회에서 전통적 의례인 관례(冠禮), 즉 성년식이 여전히 사회적 의미를 가질 수 있는지를 대학생들의 인식과 태도를 중심으로 분석하고, 이를 바탕으로 인성교육 프로그램 개발의 필요성을 제언하는 것을 목적으로 하여 진행되었다. 이를 위해 대학생 144명을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하였고 응답 결과를 통해 성년식에 대한 필요성 인식과 현대적 재구성의 방향을 도출하였다. 연구 결과, 다수의 대학생들은 법적 성년의 지위에도 불구하고 정서적·사회적 차원에서 자신을 성인으로 인식하지 못하고 있었고 성년식을 통해 공동체로부터 성인으로의 역할 전환을 공식적으로 인정받는 경험이 필요하다고 응답하였다. 특히 성인이 된 후 가장 중요하게 여기는 덕목으로‘책임감’을 꼽았고 성년으로서의 사회적 책임 수행에 대한 자각은 부족하거나 불확실한 경우가 많았다. 이는 현재 청년들이 성년으로서의 정체성과 사회적 역할 인식에 어려움을 겪고 있음을 시사하고 단순한 기념행사가 아닌 교육적 전환점을 제공하는 실질적 성년식의 필요성을 드러내는 것이라 할 수 있다. 그러나 동시에 성년식을 사회적으로 기념하는 것에 대해 부정적인 인식이 지배적인 것으로 나타나, 전통적 형식의 관례가 현대 청년층에게는 설득력을 갖기 어려운 현실도 확인되었다. 이러한 인식의 간극을 해소하기 위해 본 연구는 성년식이 현대적 인성교육의 장으로 재구성되어야 함을 주장한다. 구체적으로는 ▶책임감과 권리의식을 함양하는 인성교육, ▶자립과 독립을 위한 체험형 프로그램, ▶정체성과 가치관 확립을 위한 워크숍 및 멘토링, ▶사회적 성숙을 강조하는 공동체 교육, ▶경제적 자립 능력 함양을 위한 금융 교육 등으로 구성된 성년의식 프로그램을 제안한다. 이와 같이 성년식을 전통적 관례 수준으로 재현해 내는 것이 아니라 현대 적 모습으로 재구성하여 청소년에서 성년기로 넘어가는 대학생들에게 인성 교육을 실천하는 역할을 할 때, 관례 즉 성년식은 오늘날에도 여전히 의미 있는 사회적 의례로 그 기능을 다시 활용할 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

This study aims to explore whether gwanrye (冠禮), the traditional Korean coming-of-age ceremony, retains its social significance in modern society by analyzing university students’ perceptions and attitudes toward adulthood. A survey was conducted with 144 university students to examine their recognition of coming-of-age rituals and to derive directions for their contemporary reconstruction. The results reveal that although students are legally adults, many do not perceive themselves as emotionally or socially mature. More than half of the respondents indicated uncertainty or denial when asked whether they felt like adults, suggesting the need for a formal, communal event that affirms their adult status. Notably, “a sense of responsibility” was cited by 61.8% of respondents as the most important value associated with adulthood, highlighting the need for inner maturity beyond physical and legal growth. However, 88.5% of respondents expressed a negative view of holding formal coming-of-age ceremonies, indicating a diminished interest in traditional rituals. This gap in perception suggests that such ceremonies, if to be revitalized, must be transformed into practical educational opportunities. Accordingly, this study proposes a restructured model of the comingof- age ceremony as a platform for character development, including: (1) education on responsibility and rights, (2) experiential programs promoting independence, (3) workshops and mentoring for identity formation, (4) community engagement for social maturity, and (5) financial literacy training for economic autonomy. Through such an educational reinterpretation, the coming-of-age ceremony can move beyond a symbolic ritual to become a meaningful rite of passage that supports the growth of young adults in today’s society. study aims to provide practical directions for future program improvements. By doing so, it intends to contribute to strengthening the connection between the university’s general education and major education programs.
