국문 초록

본 연구는 ‘우리는 타인의 마음을 어떻게 이해할 수 있는가’, ‘우리는 앎을 어떻게 인식하고 해석할 것인가’라는 질문을 신경과학, 철학 분야 등 다양한 분야에서 그 의미를 고찰하고자 한다. 이 문제에 대해 마음이론 중 시뮬레이션 이론이 지배적이었다. 본 글은 이러한 전통적 이론을 비판하고, 이에 대한 대안으로 제시되는 세 가지 입장—즉, 직접적인 사회적 지각, 체화주의, 행화주의—을 비교·분석함으로써 각 이론의 특징을 조명하였다. 이 세 입장은 공통적으로 타인의 마음을 두뇌 내적상태로 간주하고 이를 직접 관찰할 수 없다고 보는 시뮬레이션 이론의 기본 전제에 반대한다. 직접적인 사회적 지각 이론은 타인의 마음에 대한 직접 지각의 가능성에 초점을 두고 있으며, 체화주의는 신체와의 상호작용을 통한 인지 형성에 주목한다. 반면, 행화주의는 사회적 상호작용을 통해 의미가 참여적으로 구성되는 관계적 절차를 강조한다는 점에서 뚜렷한 차이를 보인다. 특히, 행화주의는 사회 인지를 개인의 내면적인지 역량이 아닌, 사회적 상호작용의 과정으로 이해한다. 따라서 본 고는 타인에 대한 이해, ‘앎’이라는 개념을 고정된 시각이나 단편적인 접근에만 의존하지 않고, 다양한 이론적 관점에서 비교·분석함으로써 더 풍부하게 조명하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 기존의 마음 이론에서 벗어나, 직접적인 사회적 지각, 체화주의, 행화주의 이론을 각각 검토하고 그 의의와 시사점을 탐색하였다.

영문 초록

This study explores the questions, “How can we understand the minds of others?” and “How do we perceive and interpret knowledge?” by examining their significance across disciplines such as neuroscience and philosophy. Traditionally, the Simulation Theory(ST), a prominent version of the Theory of Mind, has dominated discussions on this issue. This paper critiques such traditional accounts and sheds light on three alternative perspectives— Direct Social Perception(DSP), embodimentism, and enactivism—through comparative analysis. These three perspectives commonly reject the core premise of ST, which views others’ minds as internal brain states that cannot be directly observed. DSP focuses on the possibility of directly perceiving others’ mental states. Embodimentism emphasizes the formation of cognition through interaction with the body. Enactivism stands out by stressing the relational process through which meaning is co-constructed in social interaction. Thud it understands social cognition not as an individual’s internal cognitive capacity, but as a dynamic process emerging through social engagement. Accordingly, this study endeavors to illuminate our understanding of others and the concept of “knowing” in a more nuanced manner by moving beyond fixed viewpoints or fragmentary approaches. To this end, it examines the theories of DSP, embodimentism, and enactivism, analyzing their implications and significance as alternatives to traditional models of mind.
