국문 초록

본고는 진주오광대 탈을 주제로 복원과 변화 양상 및 의의를 탈 제작자 황병권의 활동에 중점을 두고 논의하였다. 황병권은 진주오광대 복원에 참여해서 현재에도 진주오광대보존회의 구성원으로 활동하고 있으며, 보존회 내에서 유일하게 탈 제작을 담당하고 있다. 황병권의 경우 진주오광대 탈과 관련하여 결코 빠질 수 없는 인물이기 때문에 그의 이력과 활동에 대해서도 알아본 후, 그가 작업한 진주오광대 탈 복원 및 변화 양상에 대해서 논의하였다. 황병권은 진주오광대 탈을 현재적 의미와 가치를 중요시하면서 복원하였고, 탈의 박제화를 경계하면서 지속적으로 변화를 주었다. 이는 무형유산의 가치를 구성하는 ‘본질’에 집중하는 ‘전형’에 부합하고, 무형유산을 창조적으로 계승하고 존중하여 인류 문화에 지속 가능한 발전을 추구하는 유네스코 무형유산 협약과 부합한다고 볼 수 있다. 따라서 탈을 단순히 탈춤에서도 사용되는 소모품으로서 인식하는 것을 넘어서 탈에 관한 자체적인 연구와 탈 제작자의 목소리에 주목해야 한다.

영문 초록

This study disscusses the restoration, changes and significance of Jinju Ogwangdae masks, focusing on the activites of mask maker Hwang Byeong-Gwon. Hwang Byeong-Gwon participated in the restoration of the Jinju Ogwangdae and is currently a member of the Jinju Ogwangdae Preservation Society. He is the only person in charge of mask making within the Preservation Society. In the case of Hwang Byeong-Gwon, he is an indispensable figure in the Jinju Ogwangdae mask, so we also looked into his history and activities, we discussed the restoration and changes in the Jinju Ogwangdae masks that he worked on. Hwang, Byeong-Gwon restored the Jinju Ogwangdae mask while emphasizing its current meaning and value, and continuously changed it while being wary of taxidermy of the mask. This can be seen as conforming to the ‘typical’ of focusing on the ‘essence’ that constitutes the value of intangible cultural heritage and conforming to the UNESCO convention of creatively inheriting and respecting intangible cultural heritage and pursuing sustainable development of human culture. Therefore, we should pay attention to our own research on masks and the voices of mask makers, rather than simply recognizing masks as consumables used in masked play dances.
