국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 교육윤리학의 관점에서 민주주의와 교육의 관계를 규정하는 데 있다. 오늘날 우리가 겪는 민주주의에 대한 심각한 의미상의 혼란은 ‘정치와 교육의 분리’로부터 비롯된 것이라고 볼 수 있다. 민주주의 이념이 교육 실천과 무관하게 순전히 선거 제도, 정당 체제, 권력 분립 등과 관련된 것으로 취급될 때 자유와 평등, 인간 존중이라는 삶의 이상은 뿌리를 내릴 토대를 가질 수 없다. 정치와 교육이 근원적 동일성을 가진다고 본 플라톤적 통찰은 민주주의의 의미와 가치가 종래의 정치학이 아니라 ‘교육학과 분리되기 이전의 정치학’의 관점에서 규정될 필요가 있음을 시사한다. 교육윤리학의 관점에서 볼 때 자유와 평등 그리고 인간 존중이라는 민주주의 이념의 실현은 순전히 정치-‘교육과 분리된 정치’-의 문제가 아니다. 자유교육의 전통에 붙박인 스콜레의 정신 속에서 자유는 각자가 원하는 것을 마음대로 하는 것이 아니라 모든 종류의 일로부터 해방된 상태를 의미하는 것으로, 평등은 모든 이의 탈-무산계급화를 의미하는 것으로, 인간 존중은 인간 내부에 깃든 신적 원리에 대한 존중을 의미하는 것으로 이해될 수 있다. 진정한 민주주의의 실현과 회복, 그것은 다른 무엇보다도 교육다운 교육을 통한 스콜레 이상의 실현과 회복에 달려 있다.

영문 초록

This study aims to define the relationship between democracy and education from the perspective of educational ethics. The current profound confusion over the meaning of democracy originates from the separation between politics and education. When the ideals of democracy are regarded merely as issues related to electoral systems, party politics, or the separation of powers — apart from educational practice — the ideals of freedom, equality, and respect for humanity lose their foundation. The Platonic insight that politics and education share an essential unity suggests that the meaning and value of democracy should be understood not from the standpoint of conventional political science but from that of a “politics inseparable from education.” From the perspective of educational ethics, the realization of democratic ideals — freedom, equality, and respect for humanity — is not merely a political matter. In the spirit of scholē, rooted in the tradition of liberal education, freedom signifies liberation from all forms of labor(a-scholia) rather than the mere ability to do as one wishes; equality implies the de-proletarianization of all; and respect for humanity denotes reverence for the divine principle inherent in every human being. The realization of democracy, therefore, depends on the realization and restoration of education.
