국문 초록

본 연구는 한국어 대명사의 하위 범주인 재귀대명사 '자기'를 대상으로, 문장 내에서 동사의 의미가 선행사 해석에 미치는 영향을 규명하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 기존 연구가 주로 통사적 요인이나 제한된 의미 범주에 국한되었으나, 본 연구는 邱明波(2011)의 동사 의미 지향성 분류(내향·외향·양방향)를 한국어 자료에 적용함으로써 '자기'의 선행사 선택에 미치는 동사 의미의 영향을 체계적으로 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 단문 구조에서는 동사의 의미적 특성이 '자기'의 지시 대상을 결정하는 핵심 요인으로 작용하였다. 내향 동사는 일반적으로 자기 자신을, 외향 동사는 타인을 지시하는 경향을 보였으며 양방향 동사는 문맥에 따라 양측 모두를 지시할 수 있는 구조를 형성하였다. 복합문 구조에서는 주절 동사와 내포절 동사의 의미적 상호작용이 선행사 판단에 중요한 제약 조건으로 나타났다. 내포절 동사의 의미 지향성이 강할 경우 그 의미가 지시 방향을 주도하였고, 양방향 동사의 경우에는 주절 동사의 의미 방향성 또한 '자기'의 지시 해석에 영향을 미쳤다. 또한 주절 동사에 감정 표현이 개입된 경우, 문장의 심리적 중심이 상대적으로 주절 주어로 이동하여, '자기'의 해석이 주절주어를 지향하는 경향이 강화되었다. 이러한 결과는 '자기'의 '해석'이 단순한 통사 규칙이 아니라 의미론적·담화론적 요소들의 복합적 상호작용에 의해 형성됨을 보여준다.

영문 초록

This study aims to investigate how verb semantics influence the antecedent interpretation of the Korean reflexive pronoun 'caki', which is classified as a subcategory of Korean pronouns. While previous studies have primarily focused on syntactic factors or have been confined to limited semantic categories, this research systematically analyzes the effect of verb meaning on antecedent selection by applying Qiu Mingbo’s (2011) classification of verb orientation—inward, outward, and bidirectional—to Korean data. The analysis demonstrates that in simple sentences, the semantic properties of verbs serve as a key factor in determining the referent of 'caki': inward-oriented verbs typically make 'caki' refer to the subject itself, outward-oriented verbs favor reference to another participant, and bidirectional verbs allow both interpretations depending on the context. In complex sentences, the semantic interaction between the main-clause verb and the subordinate verb functions as an important constraint on antecedent determination. When the subordinate verb exhibits a strong semantic orientation, its meaning tends to dominate the interpretation of 'caki'; in the case of bidirectional verbs, the semantic orientation of the main-clause verb also influences the referential outcome. Furthermore, when emotional expressions are involved in the main clause, the psychological focus of the sentence tends to shift toward the matrix subject, reinforcing the tendency of 'caki' to refer to the main-clause subject. These findings demonstrate that the interpretation of 'caki' is influenced not only by syntactic but also by pragmatic factors, thereby providing theoretical support for the semantic and discourse-based approach adopted in this study.
