국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 미국 주요 주립대학에서 실시되고 있는 신입생 대상수학 진단평가 및 배치제도의 구조와 운영 현황을 비교·분석하여 한국 대학의 신입생 수리능력 진단평가 제도 설계에 주는 시사점을 도출하고자 한다. 분석 대상은 U.S. News & World Report (2025)가 발표한 상위 10개 공립대학으로 선정하여, 각 대학의 공식 안내문서 및 웹페이지에서 수집한 평가유형, 운영 방식, 교과 배정 절차 등을 체계적으로 수집한 뒤 항목화하여 분석을 실시하였다. 연구결과, 다수의 대학에서 ALEKS와 같은 적응형 진단평가 또는 자체 개발 시험을 도입하여 신입생의 기초 수리 역량을 다층적으로 평가하고, 이에 근거하여 Calculus I, Applied Calculus, Precalculus 등 세분화된 교과목에 배치하는 체계를 갖추고 있음을 확인하였다. 이러한 배치제도는 단순한 행정적 분반을 넘어, 학업적합성, 전공 유지, 수학 불안 감소 등 대학생활 전반의 성공과 밀접하게 연계된다. 본 연구는 미국 사례를 바탕으로, 국내 대학에도 디지털 기반의 적응형 진단시스템의 적극적 도입과 진단결과의 학습 지원 연계, 대학 규모 및 특성에 부합하는 맞춤형 진단평가 체계 개발 등을 제언한다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to analyze the structure and operational features of mathematics placement and diagnostic assessment systems for incoming students at leading U.S. public universities, with the goal of identifying implications for constructing placement assessment frameworks in Korean higher education. The sample comprised ten top-ranked public universities according to the 2025 U.S. News & World Report. Official documents and institutional websites were systematically examined to catalogue assessment types, implementation protocols, and course placement procedures, followed by detailed itemization and qualitative analysis. The analysis revealed that the majority of universities employ multi-layered approaches, utilizing adaptive diagnostic tests such as ALEKS or institutionally developed exams to assess students’ mathematical readiness. Based on these results, incoming students are systematically sorted into differentiated courses, including Calculus I, Applied Calculus, and Precalculus. These refined placement processes extend far beyond routine administrative sorting, serving as foundational mechanisms for academic “fit,” major retention, and mitigation of mathematics-related anxiety throughout university life. Drawing on these findings, this study proposes that Korean universities actively consider the adoption of digital adaptive diagnostic systems, intentionally integrate assessment outcomes into learning support strategies, and design placement protocols tailored to each institution’s specific environment and needs.
