수능 독서 지문 및 문항의 통사적 복잡도가 문항 정답률에 미치는 영향

국문 초록

목적: 본 연구는 대학 수학 능력 시험 국어 영역의 독서 지문과 문항의 통사적 복잡도가 문항의 정답률에 미치는 영향을 실증적으로 분석하고자 한다. 방법: 2016~2024년에 실시된 수능의 독서 지문 27개와 관련 문항 131개를 대상으로, 문항 구성 요소(지문, 발문, <보기>, 선택지)의 통사적 복잡도를 정량화하고, 그 평균값이 정답률에 미치는 영향을 다중 회귀 분석 및 민감도 분석으로 검토하였다. 결과: 문항의 통사적 복잡도 평균이 1단위 높아질수록 문항 정답률은 2.5% 정도 낮아지는 경향이 통계적으로 유의하였으며(<0.001), 민감도 분석을 통해 이러한 결과가 미관측된 교란 변수에 의해 쉽게 무효화되지 않음을 확인하였다. 또한, 통사적 복잡도가 높은 문항의 경우 문장 구조 및 연결 관계가 복잡하고 정보량이 많아 수험생의 인지적 부담을 가중할 수 있음을 논의하였다. 결론: 수능 독서 지문 및 문항의 통사적 복잡도는 문항의 정답률에 영향을 주는 중요한 변수로 작동한다. 이에 향후 독서 평가 문항 설계 및 문장 교육에 있어 통사적 복잡도를 보다 적극적으로 고려할 필요가 있다.

영문 초록

Purpose: This study investigates the effect of syntactic complexity in College Scholastic Ability Test(CSAT) Korean reading passages and item components on test-takers’ performance, as measured by answer rates. Methods: The syntactic complexity of all item components (passages, questions, examples, and options) was quantified across 27 reading passages and 131 items from the 2016-2024 CSATs. The influence of their average syntactic complexity on item answer rates was then analyzed using multiple regression and sensitivity analysis. Results: A one-unit increase in syntactic complexity was associated with a statistically significant 2.5% decrease in answer rates(<0.001). A sensitivity analysis indicated this result is robust to unobserved confounding variables. Items with higher difficulty levels typically contained more complex sentence structures and denser information, which may increase test-takers’ cognitive load. Conclusion: Syntactic complexity is a significant factor in determining item difficulty. Implications for reading assessment design and instructional practice are also discussed.
