국문 초록

기존의 동사연구는 자동사와 타동사가 별개의 하위개념으로 그 위치를 차지하고 있었다. 그러나 현재는 자동사와 타동사가 각각 독립적으로 존재하는 것이 아니라 서로 연관성을 가지고 있다고 하는 것이다. 가령, 같은 타동사라고 하더라도 타동성이 강한 동사에서 약한 동사가 있으며, 타동성이 약해지면 결국 자동사에 연결되어 간다고 하는 관점에서 연구가 진행되고 있다. 즉, 동사에는 타동원형과 자동원형이 있고, 그것이 서로 연속체의 양끝을 이룬다고 하는 프로트타이프론적인 관점에서 타동사에 대한 분석은 상당히 연구되어 있지만, 일본어 자동사에 대한 연구는 아직 초보단계라고 할 수 있다. 따라서, 본 연구에서는 동작과 상태를 나타내는 자동사가 서로 어떻게 연결되어 있는가를 자동성의 관점을 도입하여 분석했다. 우선 동사를 구문상에서 분류하고, 형태상으로 대응하는 동사의 유무에 따라 유대자동사와 무대자동사로 나누고, 의미적인 측면에서 자동사를 분류하였다. 즉, 자동사라고 하더라도 유대자동사와 무대자동사는 나타내는 의미가 다르므로, 각 동사의 의미분석을 통하여, 사태 성립에 대한 의도성의 유무, 간접수동문과의 관련성, 그리고 의지, 명령, 금지표현과의 관련성을 통해 동사의 단계를 설정하여 분석하였다. 이 분석에 의해 일본어 자동사가 어떻게 자동성의 관점에서 분류되며, 자동사와 수동표현이 어떻게 역할 분담을 하고 있는가도 명확하게 되었다.

영문 초록

Transitive and intransitive verbs were considered to belong to two distinct categories in many previous studies. Recently there have been some studies where transitive and intransitive verbs no longer belong to two distinct categories, rather they are on a continuum. In the prototype approach, prototypical transitive and intransitive verbs are at both ends of the continuum, less prototypical transitive and intransitive verbs being between them. Previous prototype analyses mainly deal with transitive verbs. This paper discusses intransitive verbs in the framework of the prototype theory. It shows how action and state intransitive verbs are related in terms of intransitivity. It classifies intransitive verbs into syntactically two different verbs--i.e. one with transitive counterparts and the other with no such counterparts. It also provides a semantic classification of intransitive verbs. It is argued that intransitive verbs with transitive counterparts and with no such counterparts show different semantic characteristics and that intransitive verbs on a continuum show different syntactic and semantic characteristics with regard to passivization. It is also shown in this paper how Japanese intransitive verbs can be analyzed in terms of intransitivity and how the functions of intransitive constructions and those of passive constructions are interrelated.
