국문 초록

자비에 돌란 감독의 <하트비트>가 받은 ‘형식 과잉’이라는 평가를 재해석하기 위해 본 연구는 형식 요소가 관객의 개입을 통해 활성화되는 ‘잠재적 기호(Potential Sign)’ 개념을 통해 영화 형식이 어떻게 능동적으로 관객의 사유를 생성하는지 규명한다. 분석 틀은 질 들뢰즈의 시간-이미지와 데이비드 보드웰의 파라메트릭 내레이션을 통합한다. 이를 바탕으로 <하트비트>의 핵심 구조인 ‘독백’과 ‘삼각형 구도’의 교차가 관객의 몰입을 지연시키는 방식을 분석하고, 미술사적 표상과 색채의 몽타주가 ‘에로스의 종말’을 재현하는 과정을 탐구한다. <하트비트>의 형식적 과잉은 관객에게 새로운 사유를 요구하는 정교한 ‘게임’이며, 원어 제목 ‘상상의 사랑들(Les Amours Imaginaires)’이 인물의 서사를 넘어 영화 매체를 통해 사유의 가능성을 상상하는 과정 자체이다.

영문 초록

This study challenges the critique of formal excess surrounding Xavier Dolan’s Les Amours imaginaires by investigating how film form actively generates spectatorial thought. It does so through the concept of the Potential Sign, a framework describing formal elements that are activated by the spectator’s engagement. The study establishes its analytical model by integrating Gilles Deleuze’s theory of the time-image and David Bordwell’s concept of parametric narration. Drawing on this framework, the paper analyzes how the interplay between the film’s core structures—the monologue and the triangular composition—disrupts spectatorial immersion. It further explores how the montage of art-historical representations and symbolic colors depicts the theme of the end of Eros. Ultimately, the study argues that the formal excess in Les Amours imaginaires is not a flaw but the rules of a sophisticated game that demands new modes of thought from the spectator. It concludes that the film’s title signifies not just the characters narrative, but the very process of imagining new possibilities of thought through the cinematic medium.
