국문 초록

본 연구는 신재효본 <심청가>에 내재한 ‘공백’과 이를 보완하는 ‘중개’의 서사적 장치를 중심으로, 곽씨부인·뺑덕어미·심청의 행적을 면밀히 분석하여 고전의 ‘다시 읽기’ 가능성을 모색하고자 하였다. 그 결과, 신재효본 <심청가>는 단순히 심봉사의 개안을 위한 효녀의 희생 서사에 국한되지 않고, 곽씨부인·뺑덕어미·심청이 여러 층위의 공백을 메우고 동시에 새로운 공백을 생성하는 주체로 작용하는 ‘중개 서사’의 독특한 구조를 지니고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 심봉사의 ‘안맹(眼盲)’이라는 절대적 결손은 단순한 불완전함이 아니라, 곽씨부인·뺑덕어미·심청의 행위를 통하여 보완됨으로써 서사 전개에 큰 영향을 미친다. 특히, 심청은 ‘심봉사의 눈망울’이라는 이름 자체가 상징하듯, 부친의 신체적·정서적 결손을 극복하는 결정적 역할을 수행한다. 본 연구는 이러한 서사적 특성을 새롭게 조명함으로써 개작자 신재효가 추구한 서술적 전략을 확인하고, 나아가 고전 텍스트에 내재한 다양한 해석의 가능성을 확장하는 데에 기여하고자 한다.

영문 초록

This study examines the narrative devices of “gap” and the “mediation” that supplements it in Sin Jae-hyo’s version of Simcheongga by closely analyzing the actions of its key characters—Lady Gwak, Baengdeok-eomi, and Simcheong—to explore new possibilities for re-reading the text. The findings reveal that Sin Jae-hyo’s Simcheongga is not confined to a sacrificial filial narrative aimed solely at restoring Simbong’s sight. Rrather, it exhibits a unique “mediation narrative” structure in which Lady Gwak, Baengdeok-eomi, and Simcheong act as agents who simultaneously fill and create multiple layers of gaps. The absolute deficiency of Simbong, referred to as “anmang” (blindness), is not merely a flaw but significantly influences the narrative development as it is compensated for through the actions of Lady Gwak, Baengdeok-eomi, and Simcheong. In particular, as her very name—Simcheong—symbolizes “Simbong’s eyes,” she plays a decisive role in overcoming her father’s physical and emotional deficiencies. By shedding new light on these narrative features, this study confirms the narrative strategy pursued by the reviser, Sin Jae-hyo, and contributes to expanding the range of interpretative possibilities inherent in classical texts.
