광기의 형식과 진실의 윤리 - 『채식주의자』론

국문 초록

본고는 한강의 『채식주의자』에 나타나는 문학적 장치와 그 효과에 주목하고 작품이 문학적 진실을 말하기 위해 구성한 형식이 무엇인지 탐구하는 데에 목적을 둔다. 이를 위해 『채식주의자』를 문학의 진실과 광기라는 키워드로 분석한다. 『채식주의자』는 광기를 단순히 서사의 주제적 소재로 삼거나 병리적 상태로 그리는 것이 아니라, 문학이 말할 수 없는 진실 즉 ‘실재’에 도달하기 위해 선택한 형식적 장치로 구성한다. 『채식주의자』의 중심인물 ‘영혜’는 서사 내에서 거의 발화하지 않으며, 스스로 말할 수 없는 자는 사회적 범주에서 광인으로 치부된다. 그러나 문학의 범주에서는 ‘광인은 스스로 말할 수 없다’는 것 자체가 진실을 내포하며, 『채식주의자』에서는 말할 수 없음이 무능력이나 무의지가 아닌 말하지 ‘않음’이라는 ‘거부’를 의미한다. 영혜는 진실을 품고 있는 광인이라는 위상으로 소설 내에서 존재하며, 서사적 긴장의 전제는 영혜의 ‘말할 수 없음’이라는 장치이다. 이러한 광기의 형식은 영혜라는 인물이 가족과 사회, 언어로 대표되는 권력 질서에 순응하지 않고, 침묵과 거식, 금지된 에로스 등 위험을 감수하는 방식으로 자기 자신을 진실의 주체로 형성해가는 일련의 실천으로 확장된다. 이를 통해 영혜는 실재의 윤리를 실행하는 주체이자 몸으로 진실을 말하는 ‘자기 테크닉’의 윤리를 실천하는 주체로서, 윤리의 정점에 가닿은 인물이 된다. 따라서 『채식주의자』는 광기라는 형식을 통해 진실을 추구하는 주체화의 윤리를 독보적인 서사기법으로 그려낸 작품이라고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This essay focuses on the literary devices and their effects in Han Kang’s The Vegetarian, and aims to explore what forms are constructed to convey literary truths. The Vegetarian does not treat madness merely as a thematic subject or pathological symptom, but rather as a formal element to reach the truth that cannot be spoken: the Real. Yeong-hye, the protagonist of The Vegetarian, rarely speaks in the novel, and a person who cannot speak is considered mad in social terms. However, in the literary realm, the idea that ‘the mad cannot speak’ connotes truth, and in The Vegetarian, it means active ‘rejection’ rather than incapacity or the absence of will. Yeong-hye occupies the position of the mad who bears truth in the story, and the narrative tension is grounded in the device of the ‘unspeakable’. This form of madness extends in the direction of developing Yeong-hye herself as a subject of truth, with actions such as resistance to the Logos of the Symbolic, including family law and social customs, silence, refusal to eat, and forbidden Eros. Through these actions, Yeong-hye becomes a figure at the height of ethics as a subject who practices the ethics of the Real and a subject of ‘technologies of the self’ enacting truth through the body. Therefore, The Vegetarian is a remarkable work that depicts the ethics of subjectivation as a pursuit of truth through the form of madness, employing a unique narrative technique.
