국문 초록

본 연구는 김진섭을 중심으로, 근대 시기에 새롭게 형성된 글쓰기 양식인 근대적 ‘수필(隨筆)’의 특성을 고찰하고자 한다. 1930년대는 이른바 ‘수필의 시대’였으며, 김진섭은 외국 문학과 사상에 정통한 대표적 수필가로서 독자적인 수필론을 구축하려 했다. 본 연구는 서구의 ‘에세이’ 장르가 일본을 거쳐 식민지 조선에 수용되는 과정을 살피고, 특히 김진섭이 근대적 장르로서의 수필 문학을 형성·전개하려 한 시도에 주목한다. 이 시기에는 이광수, 임화, 이태준 등이 각기 수필론을 제시하고, 박태원과 이상이 수필을 소설화하려는 실험을 보이는 등 장르적 탐구가 활발했다. 특히 김진섭은 「문학의 내용」(1933), 「수필의 문학적 영역」(1939)에서 수필의 문학적 가치와 장르적 범위를 제시하며 근대 수필의 정립에 중요한 기여를 했다. 그는 몽테뉴, 루소, 파브르 등 서구 사상가들의 영향을 받았으나, 특히 괴테의 문학과 사상에서 깊은 자극을 얻었다. 김진섭은 괴테를 매개로 수필의 본령을 ‘주관의 객체화’와 ‘내면의 형성’이라는 문제의식으로 정리하고, 수필을 인간 내면의 성찰, 생활과 자기 형성의 과정, 교양의 완성으로 나아가는 철학적 장르로 자리매김하려 했다. 이처럼 본 연구는 김진섭의 수필 문학 세계를 재조명함으로써, 근대 수필 문학의 새로운 전환과 그 문학사적 의의를 탐구하고자 한다.

영문 초록

This study examines the characteristics of the modern “essay” as a newly emerging mode of writing in colonial Korea, with particular focus on the works of Kim Jin-seop. The 1930s may be described as the “era of the essay,” during which Kim Jin-seop emerged as one of the representative writers of the genre. Well-versed in foreign literature and philosophy, he sought to establish an independent theory of the essay. While earlier studies have largely concentrated on the themes of his essays, their ideological influences, and conceptual limitations, this study emphasizes how Kim Jin-seop appropriated and transplanted Western and Japanese traditions of the essay in order to shape and develop it as a modern literary genre. During this period, writers such as Yi Kwang-su, Im Hwa, and Yi Tae-jun also proposed their own theories of the essay, while Park Tae-won and Yi Sang experimented with transforming the essay into fiction-demonstrating the vitality of generic experimentation. As an intellectual deeply engaged with foreign literature, Kim Jin-seop contributed to the establishment of modern essays through works such as The Content of Literature(1933) and The Literary Domain of the Essay (1939), in which he articulated its literary value and generic scope. Influenced by Western thinkers such as Montaigne, Rousseau, and Fabre, he was especially shaped by Goethe. Drawing on Goethe’s literature and thought, Kim Jin-seop conceptualized the essence of the essay as “the objectification of subjectivity” and “the formation of the inner self.” Furthermore, he envisioned the essay as a philosophical genre that emphasizes introspection, the process of human life and self-cultivation, and the pursuit of cultural refinement. By re-examining Kim Jin-seop’s essayistic world in this way, the study highlights a new turning point in modern Korean essay literature and reassesses its significance in literary history.
