톨스토이의 아동문학 작품 연구: 동물의 생명에 대한 등장인물의 인식 변화를 중심으로

국문 초록

본 논문에서는 레프 니콜라예비치 톨스토이(1828-1910)의 아동문학 작품에 나타난 동물의 생명에 대한 등장인물의 인식 변화 과정과 그것의 특징을 살펴보고자 한다. 아동문학의 본질이 그 무엇보다도 어린이의 동심을 구현하는 데 있다면, 톨스토이의 작품에서 보여지는 동심의 중요한 특징 중의 하나는 아동이 스스로의 시련을 통해 주변의 작은 생명체에 대해 연민을 느끼고, 생태계를 바라보는 한 사람의 주체로서 생명의 존엄한 가치를 인식해 간다는 것이다. 톨스토이의 아동문학 작품에서 아이들이 주변 자연 생태계와 접촉하게 될 때 생명에 대한 인식을 시작하게 되는 계기는 대부분 동물과의 만남과 연관이 있다. 본 연구에서는 톨스토이의 아동문학에서 아동과 동물이 주요 등장인물로 나오는 창작 단편들인 「작은 새」, 「집에서 살던 길들인 참새 ‘지프치크’에 대해 숙모가 해준 이야기」, 「내가 처음으로 토끼를 잡은 이야기」, 「말을 탄 경험에 대해 아저씨가 해 준 이야기」, 「새끼 고양이」등을 주요 분석 대상으로 삼고 있다. 아동들이 동물의 생명을 인식하는 과정에서 나타난 특징은 첫째, 동물의 태어남과 죽음을 목격하는 경우, 둘째, 감정과 자아를 가진 생명체로서 동물을 인식하는 경우, 셋째 동물의 생명과 일체감을 형성하는 경우 등으로 나눠볼 수 있다. 이러한 아동들의 생명인식은 톨스토이가 『인생론』에서 삶의 목적으로 내세운 모든 인간의 도덕적 완성과 최고의 선을 지향한다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study was to examine the process of changes in a character's awareness of the life of animals and the characteristics of the changes in children's literature of Leo Nikolaevich Tolstoy (1828-1910). It can basically be said that children's literature is to embody the child's mind, and one of the major characteristics of the child's mind in his literature is that children have compassion on little living things around them and realize the dignity and worth of life as members of the ecosystem while they undergo an ordeal. In his works, children start to be aware of life when they get in touch with the ecosystem around them, and an encounter with an animal serves as an opportunity for them to do that. In this study, we examined five short stories written by Tolstoy that described children and animals as main characters. The child characters become cognizant of the life of animals in three different cases, regarding the process of the life of animals. One is when they witness the birth and death of an animal. Another is when they get to view animals as living creatures with feelings, and the third is when they share a sense of unity with animals in terms of life. Such a life awareness of children is in line with what Tolstoy pursued as the purposes of life in his book “On Life,” which concerns every human being's moral perfection and the highest good.
