국문 초록

이 논문은 일본 만화 『나의 히어로 아카데미아』(『히로아카』)를 중심으로, 미국 슈퍼히어로 장르가 보유한 상징 자본이 일본적 서사 및 윤리 구조 속에서 어떻게 수용·재구성되고, 다시 글로벌 대중문화 장으로 역수출되는지를 분석한다. 본 연구는 피에르 부르디외의 상징 자본 이론과 아메리카니즘의 문화정치학을 이론적 틀로 삼아, 올마이트와 스타 앤 스트라이프라는 두 인물의 비교를 통해 일본 만화가 미국적 문화 권위를 어떻게 전유하고 비판적으로 재해석하는지를 고찰한다. 올마이트는 미국 슈퍼히어로의 형식적 요소를 체현하면서도, 일본 사회 내에서 ‘평화의 상징’으로 윤리적 정당성을 획득한 인물로 기능하며, 스타 앤 스트라이프는 미국주의의 극단을 구현하다 자멸함으로써 미국 상징 자본의 위기를 드러낸다. 이러한 분석을 통해 『히로아카』는 단순한 문화 수용 텍스트가 아니라, 상징 자본의 순환과 권위의 재배치를 실현하는 능동적 서사로 자리매김한다. 이에 본 논문은 오늘날 글로벌 대중문화 장에서 상징 자본이 어떻게 구성되고 이동하며 윤리적으로 정당화되는지를 설명하는 데 중요한 이론적 단초를 제공한다.

영문 초록

This study examines how the American symbolic capital embedded in the superhero genre is reinterpreted, reconstructed, and re-exported through the Japanese animation My Hero Academia (Boku no Hīrō Akademia). Drawing on Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of symbolic capital and the cultural politics of Americanism, the paper analyzes the contrasting representations of two key characters—All Might and Star and Stripe—to reveal how Japanese manga appropriates and redefines American cultural authority. While All Might embodies the formal aesthetics of the American superhero, he is recontextualized within Japanese ethics and narrative traditions as the “Symbol of Peace.” In contrast, Star and Stripe represents an exaggerated form of Americanism whose narrative arc culminates in self-destruction, symbolizing the crisis of unchecked symbolic capital. The analysis positions My Hero Academia not merely as a text of cultural borrowing, but as an active narrative of symbolic circulation and authority redistribution. Ultimately, this paper contributes to understanding how symbolic capital is constructed, negotiated, and ethically redefined in the global popular culture field.
