이민사회 힌두교의 지역성과 초국가주의적 성격

국문 초록

오늘날 해외 이민사회 힌두교는 흔히 통일된 인도인 정체성을 부여하는‘에쓰닉 종교’로 정의되고 있다. 하지만 BAPS 스와미 나라야나의 폐쇄적인 구자라티 정체성과 그들의 초국가주의적 움직임은, 이민사회 힌두교가 현대화, 지구화 속에서 전적으로 통합의 길을 선택하는 것만은 아님을 보여준다. 이들은 지역성의 경계를 허물지 않은 상태에서 인도인 디아스포라 전체와 공존하는 길을 찾고 있다. 이러한 사실은 지역성, 다양성을 기반으로 해 온 힌두교들이 현대화, 지구화 속에서 세속화 된‘하나의 힌두교’에 결국은 흡수될 수밖에 없는 것이 아니라, 고유한 정체성을 유지하면서 나름대로 변화해 갈 것임을 시사한다.

영문 초록

Among Hindu communities overseas, we witness the trends have led from village and caste beliefs and practices to wider, more universalistic definitions of Hinduism that cut across local and caste difference. However, many regional Hinduisms are doing well 'negotiating' among united form of Hinduism and secularization, modernization, and globalization of their society showing dinamics and diversity of Hinduism. In the case of BAPS, a sect of Swaminarayan Hinduism, through strict asceticism, revering sadhu, stressing bhakti spirit they cherish their own conservative culture. And at the same time they are so active in social services, managing Mandirs as a cultural museum, localization, various cultural programs over many parts of the world in the name of spirit of religion. A key to the future of Swaminarayan Hinduism will be the nature and strength of the transnational networks and leadership that are transforming religion in Indian and the experience of immigrants from India in many regions of the world.
