다운증후군아동 얼굴수술에 대한 실태 및 그 효과에 관한 조사 연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 다운증후군 아동들의 얼굴수술 부위, 수술 이유 그리고 수술 효과 및 만족도를 조사해 보고자 하였다. 사용된 연구방법으로는 얼굴수술을 한 자녀를 둔 부모 58명을 대상으로 한 설문 조사를 통해서였다. 조사 결과를 보면 다운증후군 아동들의 얼굴수술은 신체 및 언어발달 측면의 기능 향상, 다운인의 특징을 드러내는 용모의 변화, 그리고 사회적 수용의 증진 등을 위해 행해지고 있었다. 수술 부위는 11군데에 이르는 것으로 나타났으며, 한 군데만 수술하는 경우부터 여섯 군데를 수술하는 경우까지 다양하였다. 수술의 효과에 대한 평가에서는 신체적 기능에 대한 향상뿐 아니라 용모의 변화 및 사회적 수용과 관련된 항목 등 제시된 12개 항목 가운데 9개 항목에서 긍정적인 평가가 우세하였다. 아울러 수술 결과에 대한 만족도 조사에서는 71%가 만족한다고 응답하였다. 다른 부모에게의 권유 여부에 대해서는 81%가 권유한다고 하였다. 본 연구의 결과는 다운증후군 아동들의 교육 및 치료 분야에서 일하는 사람들에게 다운증후군 아동을 위한 의료적 중재의 한 방법으로 알려진 얼굴수술의 실태 및 이와 관련된 논쟁점들이 무엇인지를 알려줄 뿐 아니라, 다운증후군 자녀를 양육하는 부모들이 장차 자녀의 얼굴수술 여부에 대한 결정을 하는 데 활용할 수 있는 정보를 제공해 줄 것으로 기대된다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study was to investigate the actual state of facial surgery for children with Down syndrome and the effects of this practice. 58 parents with a child having Down syndrome participated in this study. The instrument used to gather data for this study was a parent survey. The results were as follows. First, it was found that facial surgery has been performed for children with Down syndrome to improve their physical functioning, characteristic appearance, and social acceptance. Second, the surgery was performed on 11 parts of the face including the forehead, eyes, nose, tongue, chin and so on. Third, in terms of the effects of the surgery. the majority of parents reflected a positive evaluation of the surgery in 9 out of 12 items including physical functioning, characteristic appearances, and social acceptance. Fourth, 71% of the responding parents concluded that they were satisfied with the results of the surgery. Fifth, when asked whether they would recommend facial surgery to other parents of children with Down syndrome, 81% of parents answered 'yes.'The results of this study will demonstrate to people who work to educate and intervene on behalf of children who have Down syndrome the actual state of this facial surgery known as a medical intervention and its related issues. This study will also provide information to the parents of children with Down syndrome in order that they may use this information to help make decisions when they are considering surgery as an option for their child.
