국문 초록

본 연구는 2000년 이후 한국에서 출판된 사실그림책에 묘사된 다문화가정 유아의 이미지를 살펴봄으로써 다문화사회와 다문화가정 구성원들을 바라보는 한국 사회의 인식을 비판적으로 고찰하고 바람직한 다문화 교육의 방향성을 모색하는데 연구의 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 다문화가정 유아들이 등장하는 그림책 14권에 대한 내용 분석을 실시했다. 연구 결과 첫째, 유아들은 ‘다른 존재로 인식되는 어린이’ 이미지로 나타났다. 유아들은 그림책에서 기존 집단에 새롭게 등장하고 외모로 인해 타인으로부터 주목받는 모습으로 그려졌다. 둘째, 유아들은 ‘타인과의 관계에 어려움을 겪고 극복하는 어린이’ 이미지로 나타났다. 이들은 친구들로부터 놀림을 받고 극복하거나 외국인 부모와의 관계를 점차 발전시켜나가는 존재로 묘사되었다. 셋째, 유아들은 ‘정체성을 인식하고 확장하는 어린이’ 이미지로 묘사되었다. 이들은 자신의 다문화가정 배경에 대해 알고 외국 가족들과의 교류하여 가족애를 형성하며 그 나라의 언어와 문화를 배워나갔다. 이 같은 결과는 다문화가정 유아들이 겪는 독특한 문화적 배경에 기인한 갈등보다는 유아로서 겪는 평범한 일상과 이들이 갖는 잠재력을 그린 양질의 다문화 그림책이 필요함을 시사한다.

영문 초록

The aim of this study was to critically examine the perspective of South Korean society on the children in multicultural families in their early childhood based on the images depicted in picture books, and to find a new direction for suitable multicultural education. Towards this end, a content analysis was conducted of 14 picture books in which children in multicultural families appeared. The results of this study are as follows: First, the children of multicultural families appeared in picture books as an image of 'children recognized for their ‘different existence' due to the emergence of a new member in the existing group and for their difference from other members. Second, the multicultural children were drawn in picture books as an image of 'children who overcome the difficulties in forming and maintaining the relationships with others' by being ridiculed by their friends first but soon overcoming such ordeals or gradually developing relationships with their foreign parents. Third, multicultural children are drawn in picture books as an image of 'children recognizing and expanding their identities' by learning about the background of their multicultural families, by interacting with foreign families, forming family love, and by learning the language and culture of their parent’s birth country. The results suggest that many picture books that contain ordinary and positive experiences as well as multicultural competence of children of multicultural families should be published.
