국문 초록

본 연구는 12개월 자녀를 둔 초보 어머니들이 자녀를 양육하면서 경험하는 실제적 어려움과 그 의미를 이해하는데 목적이 있다. 본 연구를 위하여 연구시점에 생후 12개월의 첫 자녀를 양육하고 있는 어머니 7명을 선정하여 심층면담과 집단면담을 실시하였다. 연구 결과, 12개월 자녀를 둔 초보 어머니들은 12개월의 자녀에게 기대했던 양육어려움의 감소와 상반된 육체적, 심리적 어려움의 증가를 경험하고 있었으며, 동시에 성장하는 자녀의 ‘예쁜 짓’으로 인한 기쁨을 경험하고 있었다. 또한 어머니에게 자녀의 12개월은 자신의 양육과 자녀의 성장, 발달을 점검해보는 시간인 것으로 나타났다. 한편, 어머니들이 경험하는 양육 어려움은 남편의 정서적 지지가 낮거나 양육과 관련된 경제적 부담감이 클 때 심화되었다. 마지막으로 자녀의 12개월은 어머니들이 사회복귀에 대한 고민을 하는 첫 번째 시기인것으로 나타났다.

영문 초록

This study explored the experiences of new mothers with 12-month-old infants, focusing on the difficulties they experienced during their child-rearing. For the study, seven inexperienced mothers nurturing their 12-month-old infants participated in a group discussion and in-depth interviews. The study revealed that, contrary to the initial expectations that their child-rearing difficulties would subside with the advent of the 12-month-old benchmark, the mothers experienced a significant amount of physical and emotional difficulties. Nonetheless, it was shown that the mothers also experienced satisfaction due to the advancement and “charm” of their infants at the 12-month-old juncture. It was also found that the 12-month-old benchmark also served as the mothers’ self-checkpoint time for evaluating their children’s developmental progress through the comparison with other children of similar age. As a way of alleviating their child-rearing burden and difficulties, fathers’ emotional support was perceived to be critical. The economic burden associated with child-rearing was also one of the important aspects affecting the mothers’ child-rearing experience. Furthermore, the study showed that the 12-month-old benchmark is a point of time when the mothers started considering their return to the societal activities.
