국문 초록

과학기술의 발전과 함께 이공계생을 대상으로 한 글쓰기 및 커뮤니케이션 교육이 더욱 중요해지고있다. 세계 유수 대학에서는 전공 연계 글쓰기(WAC)나 전공 글쓰기(WID) 등과 관련된 다양한 글쓰기수업 및 프로그램이 이공계 학생을 대상으로 운영되고 전문가나 비전문가를 대상으로 한 커뮤니케이션교육이 강화되고 있다. 이에 비해 우리나라 대학의 관련 교육 여건은 여전히 부족한 실정이다. 본연구에서는 세계 대학 순위 10위권에 속하는 미국 대학 네 곳(하버드, UC 버클리, 스탠퍼드, MIT)을중심으로 이공계생 대상 글쓰기 및 커뮤니케이션 교육 현황을 살펴보고, 국내 주요 대학의 경우와비교하였다. 구체적으로는 대학 글쓰기 필수 교과목의 개설 현황과 성격, 이공계 단과대학에서 개설하는전공 글쓰기 및 커뮤니케이션 교과목 현황, 이공계 단과대학의 개별 프로그램이나 센터에서 운영하는글쓰기 및 커뮤니케이션 프로그램의 현황 등을 살펴보았다. 이를 통해 이공계 학생을 위한 글쓰기및 커뮤니케이션 교육을 활성화하기 위해 대학 차원의 논의와 지원이 더욱 활발히 이루어져야 함을이야기하고자 한다.

영문 초록

Advancements in science and technology have made writing and communication skills increasingly essential for undergraduate students in science and engineering. Leading global universities offer various writing courses and programs grounded in Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) and Writing in the Disciplines (WID) frameworks, and they are strengthening training programs designed to develop students’ ability to communicate science and technology effectively to both expert and non-expert audiences. Compared to globally top-ranked universities, Korean universities currently provide relatively limited support for education in this area. This study conducts a comparative analysis of the current state of writing and communication education for undergraduate students in science and engineering at four globally top-ranked universities in the United States—Harvard, UC Berkeley, Stanford, and MIT—and seven leading universities in Korea. Specifically, it examines the current status of required writing courses offered by the universities, discipline-based writing and communication courses offered by colleges of science and engineering, and writing centers and related programs supporting undergraduate students in these fields. The paper aims to highlight the need for more proactive institutional support and sustained discussion at the university level to advance writing and communication education for undergraduate students in science and engineering in the age of artificial intelligence.
