국문 초록

이 논문은 전후 영국을 배경으로 고등교육에 대한 국가적 및 사회적 요구를 분석하고, 대학들이 이러한 요구에 어떻게 대응하며 변화해 왔는지를 살펴본다. 이를 위해 먼저 영국 대학 교육의 성립과 발전 과정을 개괄하고, 1960 년대에 등장한 신흥 대학교(New University)의 형성과 성장에 주목한다. 특히, 전후 영국에서 ‘새로운’ 대학의 대표적 사례이자 성공적인 사례로 평가받는워릭 대학교(University of Warwick)에 집중하여, 이 대학의 개교 과정과 이후의 발전을 재구성한다. 이를 통해 고등교육 기관이 국가와 지역, 그리고 사회적·경제적 요구에 어떻게 부응해왔는지를 구체적으로 파악할 수 있다. 또한, 워릭 대학교의 학사 과정을 살펴봄으로써 사회가 고등교육에 기대하는 역할이 어떻게 실현되는지 확인할 수 있다. 이 사례를 통해 대학 제도가 오랜 역사속에서 지속될 수 있었던 이유를 탐구하고, 개별 교육 기관이 변화하는 환경에 적응하고 나아가 성공적으로 발전하는 데 필요한 주요 요소들을 밝힐 수있을 것이다.

영문 초록

This paper analyses the national and social demands for higher education in post-war Britain and examines how universities have responded to and changed in response to these demands. To this end, it overviews the establishment and development of English university education, and captures the formation and growth of the New Universities that emerged in the 1960s. In particular, this paper focuses on the University of Warwick, which has been regarded as a representative and the most successful case of ‘new’ universities. It reconstructs the founding process and subsequent development of the University, which allows for a concrete understanding of how higher education institutions have responded to national, regional, and socio-economic demands. Additionally, by examining the curricula and programs at the University of Warwick, it is possible to understand how society's expectations of higher education are realized in universities. Through this case study, we can explore the reasons why the university system has endured over a long history and identify the key elements necessary for individual educational institutions to adapt to changing environments and achieve successful development.
