국문 초록

한국의 서원은 조선시대 성리학의 발전을 촉진시키고 지역의 교육, 문화, 지성사의 수준을 높이는데 크게 기여한 지방문화의 중심지로서 한국 유교문화의 다양성과 개성이 집약된 문화유산이다. 이러한 ‘탁월한 보편적 가치’를인정받아, 2019년 9개 서원이 세계유산으로 지정되었다. 한국 서원 연구의 활성화를 위해서 급선무는 현전하는 자료들을 정리·보존및 연구와 활용을 위한 아카이브 구축이다. 이는 자료의 포괄적 수집과 정리, 아카이브의 그리고 콘텐츠 개발 등으로 이루어져야 한다. 서원의 정신사적, 문화사적 위상을 조명하기 위해서는 학제 간 연구, 특히그동안 미온적이었던 전공의 적극적인 참여를 요한다. 이러한 연구는 장기적으로 다양한 콘텐츠 개발로 이어질 수 있는 토대가 될 것이다. 한국의 서원이 16~17세기 성리학의 지방 전파의 거점 역할을 한 교육기관으로서 세계유산에 지정된 만큼, 서원의 정체성을 확보하기 위해서는 동·서양의 교육기관과 비교사적 연구를 통한 외연 확대가 필요하다. 현재 1,000여개 이상 남아있는 서원은 그 서원만의 교유한 특성화 자원과요소를 조명해 콘텐츠 방안을 제시하고, 현대적 활용이 잘 진행되고 있는 사례를 통해 그 대안을 모색해야 한다.

영문 초록

Korea's seowon (Confucian academies) are cultural heritage sites that epitomize the diversity and distinctiveness of Korean Confucian culture. As centers of local culture, they significantly contributed to the advancement of Neo-Confucianism during the Joseon Dynasty and elevated the standards of regional education, culture, and intellectual history. Recognized for their ‘Outstanding Universal Value,’ nine seowon were inscribed as World Heritage sites in 2019. The most urgent task for revitalizing research on Korean seowon is organizing and preserving extant materials and establishing an archive for research and utilization. This requires comprehensive collection and organization of materials, development of the archive itself, and content development. Illuminating the intellectual and cultural historical significance of seowon necessitates interdisciplinary research, particularly the active participation of disciplines that have been lukewarm until now. Such research will lay the groundwork for long-term development of diverse content. Given that Korea's seowon were designated as World Heritage sites for their role as educational institutions disseminating Neo-Confucianism locally during the 16th and 17th centuries, securing their identity necessitates expanding their scope through comparative historical research with Eastern and Western educational institutions. The over 1,000 seowon still existing today should highlight their unique educational resources and elements to propose content strategies, and explore alternatives by examining cases where modern utilization is progressing well.
