International NICs Trade and the Linder Hypothesis

국문 초록

본 논문은 아시아의 NICs(한국, 싱가포르, 대만, 홍콩)와 관련한 교역에 있어서 1980년부터 1999년까지의 자료를 이용하여 Linder hypothesis의 유효성에 관하여 분석하였다. 이 논문에서의 주된 분석 방법은 1인당 국민 소득격차를 중요한 변수로 취급하여 무역상대국과의 무역패턴을 결정하는 요인으로 간주하였다는 점이다. 분석결과에 따르면, NICs와 무역상대국과의 교역은 Linder의 가설을 입증한다는 긍정적인 결과를 도출하였다. 이와 같은 결과는 NICs가 1인당 국민소득이 비슷한 국가들과의 교역을 더욱더 많이 하였다는 것을 의미한다. 분석결과에 따르면 Linder의 가설은 한국과 대만보다는 상대적으로 홍콩과 싱가포르에서 더 큰 효과를 나타냈는데 이는 이때에 이들 국가들의 가처분 소득이 더 높은 수준이었으며 또한 개방을 더욱 확대하면서 나타난 결과로 보여 진다. 또한 분석결과에 따르면 교역상대국들의 1인당 국민소득의 합은 NICs의 수출에 긍정적인 영향을 준 반면에, 거리는 부정적인 영향을 주었으며, 모두 유의하게 영향을 미친 것으로 나타났다.

영문 초록

The study examines the validity of the Linder hypothesis from the perspective of Asia's NICs(Korea, Singapore, Taiwan and Hong Kong) trade with the trading partners for the period 1980-1999. The analysis employs the per capita income differential as a determinant of trade patterns among trade partners and presents evidence in support of the Linder hypothesis. The findings imply that these countries trade more intensively with other countries that have similar per capita income levels, as predicted by Linder. The study also reveals that the Linder hypothesis is relatively stronger in Hong Kong and Singapore than in Korea and Taiwan. It might be related to higher per capital income level and recent globalization of those countries. The study results also show that the sum of the per capita income for the exporting and importing countries and distance variables have the expected signs and are statistically significant.
