국문 초록

본 연구는 총 18개 산업 부문에 대해 1998년부터 2004년까지 기간 중 미국 50개주의 주별 산업특화와 해당 주의 기업과 주정부의 관계를 패널 회귀분석을 통해 고찰한다. 본 연구의 실증분석 결과는 금융, 교통 산업 부문의 산업특화는 기업의 규모가 클수록 심화되며, 농업, 부동산, 교육 부문의 산업특화는 주정부의 효율성과 밀접한 관련이 있다는 증거를 제시한다. 본 연구의 실증결과는 산업특화 정책을 제고하는 데 있어서 해당지역의 기업과 지방정부의 역할을 고려해야 한다는 시사점을 제공한다.

영문 초록

We provide empirical investigation for the relation between the industrial specialization and local institutions such as firms and governments for the fifty US states. In doing so, we consider the eighteen sectors of industries during the period from 1998 to 2004. We find that regional specialization for finance and transportation significantly depends on large-sized firms. In addition, our empirical results suggest that more efficient state governments improve the specialization of agriculture, real estate, and education sectors. We conclude that policy makers need some discretion in considering the roles of firms and local governments for regional specialization in different types of industries.
