국문 초록

이 논문은 외국인 유학생의 문화적응 경험을 탐구하고, 유학생들의 이야기를 통해 그들의 생활세계 속에서 나타난 경험의 의미에 대하여 현상학적으로 해석한 것이다. 이를 통해 외국인 유학생들의 개인적 삶을 이해하고, 유학생들을 위한 정책과 다수인 정주민들에게 필요한 사회적 인식의 전환을 제언하고자 했다. 연구를 위하여 중국, 베트남, 필리핀, 캄보디아, 스리랑카 출신의 유학생 8명을 심층면담하여 자료를 수집하고 그 내용을 분석했다. 연구결과, 연구참여자들의 문화적응 경험의 의미는‘새로운 세계에 대한 열망’,‘경계에 선 이방인’,‘언어의 높은 장벽’,‘인정받기 위한 노력’,‘커뮤니티를 통한 정서적 유대감’,‘다양한 관계 맺기’,‘상호문화적 매개자’로 나타났다. 문화적응 과정에서 나타난 이들의 다양한 경험들은 성공적인 유학생활을 위한 토대가 될 것이다. 출신 문화에 대한 정체성을 유지하면서 새롭게 접한 거주지 문화와도 긍정적인 관계를 맺는 문화적응 유형이 통합이기 때문이다. 외국인 유학생들을 위한 정부와 대학의 정책이 행정적인 양적 증대를 넘어 실제 생활세계에서 필요한 질적인 지원이 될 수 있도록 유학생들의 목소리에 지속적으로 귀를 기울여야 한다.

영문 초록

This phenomenological study explores the experiences of foreign students cultural adaptation and interprets the meaning of experiences in their worlds through the stories as told by them. The paper also aims to understand the personal lives of foreign students, and to suggest a policy for international students and a shift in social awareness in regular Korean society. For this research, eight foreign students from China, Vietnam, Philippines, Cambodia and Sri Lanka were interviewed in-depth for the data. As a result, the meaning of experiences related to cultural adaptation of research participants was as follows: “aspire to a new world”, “strangers on the border”, high barriers of language”, “efforts for recognition”, “emotional connection through the community”, “various relationships”, “intercultural mediators”. Their diverse experiences during cultural adaptation are the foundation for successfully studying abroad. This is because integration is a type of cultural adaptation that maintains an identity of one’s original culture and has a positive relationship with the new residential culture. The government and university policies for international students should continue to listen to the voices of foreign students so that they can go beyond administrative quantitative growth and provide the necessary quality support in the real world.
