Peirce의 기호학적 관점을 통해 본 중학교 1학년 학생들의 문자와 대수 막대의 연결 과정 분석

국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 Peirce의 기호학적 관점에서 중학교 1학년 학생들이 문자와 대수막대를 연결하는 기호 과정과 그 과정에서 경험하는 어려움을 분석하는 것이다. 이를위해 교수실험법을 적용하여 서울 소재 J중학교 1학년 학생 4명을 대상으로 약 2개월에 걸쳐 총 8차시의 수업을 진행하였다. 연구 결과, 학생들은 기호, 대상, 해석체 간의복합적인 관계 형성을 통해 문자와 대수 막대를 연결하는 것으로 나타났다. 학생들은'문자의 사용과 식' 내용에서 사용했던 문자(대상)를 확인한 후, 대수 막대(기호)를매개로 하여 노란색 직사각형 대수 막대의 면적을 문자 로 인식하였다. 또한 학생들은초록색 직사각형 막대, 노란색 정사각형 막대, 연두색 직사각형 막대, 초록색 정사각형 막대를 각각 문자 y, x², xy, 그리고 y²으로 인식하는 해석체를 형성하였다. 그러나 학생들은 대수 막대를 문자로 인식하는 기호 과정과 대수 막대의 넓이를 문자로인식하는 기호 과정에서 어려움을 경험하였다. 이러한 어려움은 교사의 적절한 질문과 안내를 통해 극복될 수 있었다. 본 연구는 중학교 1학년 학생들이 구체적 조작물인 대수 막대를 통해 추상적인 문자 개념을 어떻게 이해하고 연결하는지 밝힘으로써, '문자의 사용과 식' 학습에서 대수 막대 활용의 교육적 가치와 한계를 구체화하였다는 점에서 의의가 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study was to analyze the process by which first-year middle school students connect algeblocks with literal symbols from Peirce's semeiotic perspective, and the difficulties they experience in this process. For this purpose, a teaching experiment was conducted with four first-year students from J Middle School in Seoul over a period of two months, comprising a total of eight class sessions. The results showed that students connected algeblocks with literal symbols through the formation of complex relationships among signs, objects, and interpretants. Students first identified the literals(objects) used in 'Use of Literals and Expressions' content, and then recognized the area of a yellow rectangular algeblocks as the literal x through the medium of the algeblocks(sign). Furthermore, students formed interpretants that recognized green rectangular blocks, yellow square blocks, light green rectangular blocks, and green square blocks as the literals y, x², xy, and y², respectively. However, students experienced difficulties in the process of recognizing algeblocks as letters and in recognizing the area of algeblocks as letters. These difficulties could be overcome through appropriate questioning and guidance from the teacher. This study is significant in that it clarifies the educational value and limitations of using algeblocks in learning 'Use of Literals and Expressions' by revealing how first-year middle school students understand and connect abstract literal concepts through concrete manipulatives such as algeblocks.
