교육 도구로서 영어 웹툰 활용에 관한 연구: 교양 영어 사례 연구를 중심으로

국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 대학 교양 영어 수업에서 영어 웹툰을 교육 도구로 활용하는 것이 학습자의 학습 성취도에 어떤 영향을 미치는지를 고찰하는 것이다. 이와 더불어 영어 웹툰의 활용이 학습자의 만족도에 미치는 영향과 그 이유를 분석하여 EFL 교실에서 영어 웹툰 활용의 가치를 고찰하고자 하였다. 본 연구에서는 일상생활 속 소소한 일들을 다루는 My Giant Nerd Boyfriend라는 웹툰을 사용하였다. 연구 방법으로는 두 번의 성취도 테스트, 반구조화된 설문조사, 자가 저널을 활용하여 양적 분석과 질적 분석을 혼합하여 시행하였다. 연구 결과, 첫 번째 성취도 테스트보다 두 번째 성취도 테스트의 점수가 더 높게 나타났고 두 테스트 간에 유의미한 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 교양 영어 수업에서 영어 웹툰을 학습 자료로 활용하는 것에 대해 학습자들의 만족도는 전반적으로 높은 것으로 나타났으며(71.4%), 이러한 만족도의 이유로는 공감가는 일상, 일상적 영어표현의 학습, 과업의 재미와 낮은 난이도, 생동적 학습 환경인 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구 결과를 바탕으로 EFL 수업에서 영어 웹툰 활용을 위한 교육학적 제언을 제시하였다.

영문 초록

This study examined the effectiveness of English webtoons as an educational tool in university general English classes. Specifically, a teacher used a webtoon called “My Giant Nerd Boyfriend”, which deals with trivial aspects of daily life, to analyze how English webtoons impact both learning achievement and learners’ affective domains. This study conducted two English achievement tests to assess the impact of English webtoons on learning achievement and found significant improvement between the first and second tests. Meanwhile, learners reported high (71.4%) overall satisfaction with English webtoons as learning materials, highlighting the webtoons’ relatability to daily life and helpfulness with everyday English expressions as well as the enjoyability and low difficulty level of the task and the lively learning environment it fostered. The study concluded by making pedagogical suggestions based on these findings for the use of English webtoons.
