국문 초록

프랑스에서 랩은 단순히 하나의 음악 장르를 넘어 사회적·정치적 메시지를 전달하는 강력한 수단으로 자리 잡고 있다. 1980년대 후반 미국 힙합의 영향으로 등장한 프랑스의 랩은 이민자 커뮤니티와 도시 빈민층의 목소리를 대변하며 급속도로 성장했다. 특히 1990년대와 2000년대 초반을 거치며 사회적 불평등, 폭력적 경찰, 소외된 청소년들의 분노를 표현하는 강한 저항적 색채를 띠기 시작했다. 이러한 과정 속에서 프랑스 랩은 단지 대중문화의 한 갈래가 아니라 사회 변화를 촉진하고 정치적 의제를 형성하는 요소로 기능하고 있다. 프랑스 사회는 여러 정치적 사건을 통해 격변을 겪어왔는데, 이 과정에서 랩 음악은 특정 계층의 불만을 대변하는 저항의 수단이 되었다. 청년들의 불만이 폭발한 대표적인 사건인 2005년 파리 외곽 지역의 대규모 소요사태는 프랑스 랩의 가사와 메시지에 강한 영향을 미쳤다. 경찰의 과잉 진압과 사회적 배제에 분노한 젊은이들은 랩을 통해 프랑스 사회의 계층 간 불균형을 더욱 선명하게 드러내었다. 또한 2018년의 ‘노란조끼 운동’은 노동자 계층과 서민들의 분노를 표출하는 대규모 시위로 확산되었으며 랩이 이 운동 속에서 불평등에 대한 강한 비판을 담은 메시지를 전달하였다. 이와 더불어 2010년대에 일어난 극우정당의 부상은 프랑스 내 정치적 균열을 심화시키며 랩 문화와의 갈등을 더욱 격화시켰다. 특히 마린 르펜이 이끄는 국민전선의 부상은 다문화 사회에 대한 반발과 보수적인 이데올로기의 강화를 초래했는데, 이는 랩 아티스트들과 정치권 간의 긴장 관계를 조성하는 요인이 되었다. 이 논문은 프랑스 랩이 어떻게 사회적 저항의 수단으로 기능하며 정치적 사건들과 상호작용을 이루고 있는지 분석하는 데 초점을 맞춘 연구이다. 2005년의 소요사태, 극우 정당의 부상 그리고 노란조끼 운동을 통해 프랑스 사회에서 랩 음악이 젊은 세대를 대변하는 과정과 랩의 소비자인 젊은이들이 위험한 계층으로 규정되는 과정에 대해 고찰하였다. 이를 통해 랩이 음악의 한 장르로서의 지위뿐 아니라 이를 넘어서는 사회적 의미를 포함하고 있다는 사실을 이해할 수 있도록 하였다.

영문 초록

In France, rap has transcended its origines as a musical genre, evolving into a poten mediem for conveying social and political messages. Emerging in the late 1980s under the influence of American hip-hop, French rap quickly gained popularity, particularly among immigrant communities and economically disadvantaged urban populations. It became a vehicle for marginalized groups to express their grievances, addressing issues such as social inequality, police brutality, and the disillusionment of disenfranchised youth. By the 1990s and early 2000s, French rap had developed a distinctive, politically charged character, serving as a reflection of the struggles faced by those on the periphery of society. Amid significant political and social upheavals in France, rap music became a powerful outlet for expressing sorrow and a form of resistance. A pivotal moment in this trejectory occurred during the 2005 riots that erupted in the suburbs of Paris and other cities, sparked by the deaths of two teenagers fleeing from the police. These events exposed the deep-seated frustrations of young people experiencing systemic discrimination and social exclusion. In response, many rap artists channeled this anger into their lyrics, transforming their music into a compelling criticism social injustice. The messages embedded in these songs resonated with those who felt marginalized, solidifyng rap’s position as a key medium for political expression and resistance. The 2010s witnessed another shift in France’s political landscape, marked by the rise of far-right movements. The growing influence of Marine Le Pen and the National Front (now National Rally) fueled ideological tensions, particularly regarding immigration, national identity, and multiculturalism. Many rap artists, often from immigrant backgrounds, found themselves at odds with the rhetoric of these far-right groups, leading to an intensification of the ongoing cultural and political battle. The clash between rap culture and conservative ideologies highlighted the deep-seated divisions within French society. Moreover, the Yellow Vest movement of 2018 further reinforced the role of rap in articulating public grievances. The widespread protest, driven by economic hardship and a perceived sense of social injustice, found resonance in the lyrics of rap songs that expressed frustration with growing inequality and governmental indifference. Rap artists became both commentators and active participants in this movement, using their platform to amplify the voices of those affected by systemic issues. This study explores the role of French rap as a tool for social resistance and examines its interaction with significant political events over the past few decades. Focusing on the 2005 riots, the rise of the far-right, and the Yellow Vest protests, this analysis highlignts how rap music has articulated the concerns of the younger generation, while simultaneously being framed as a threat by certain political and media discourses. Through this investigation, the paper seeks to undercore the broader social significance of rap, positioning it not merely as a musical genre, but as a powerful force in shaping political discourse and influencing public perception.
