국문 초록

본 논문은 일본 근대 문학자 아쿠타가와 류노스케와 중국 근대 문화 계의 지식인 구홍명의 교류를 중심으로, 두 사람이 언어, 문화, 개인의 운명 등 여러 측면에서 충돌과 성찰을 다루고 있다. 1921년, 아쿠타가와는 『마이니치 신문』특파원 자격으로 중국을 방문하여 전통문화를 수호하는 것으로 유명한 구홍명을 만나게 되었고, 이들의 만남은 중일 문화 교류의 중요한 사례로 기록되었다. 구홍명은 중국과 서양 문화가 융합된 환경에서 태어나 서양 교육을 받으며 여러 언어를 구사할 수 있었고, 만년에 이르러 중국 전통문화를 선양하는 데 힘썼다. 그는 유교 사상의 보편적 가치를 강조하며 영어 저술을 통해 서양 사회가 가진 중국에 대한 편견을 바꾸고자 했다. 아쿠타가와는 『북경기행』에서 구홍명과의 교류를 기록하며 그의 외모, 대화 내용, 문화적 태도를 묘사했다. 두 사람은 영어로 대화했지만, 영어가 모국어가 아닌 한계 때문에 심도 있는 이해에는 어려움이 있었다. 한편, 구홍명은 딸에게 일본어 『이로하노우타』를 암송하게 하여 일본 문화에 대한 존중과 동양 문화 계승에 대한 기대를 보여주었다. 그러나 아쿠타가와는 이러한 형식화된 전승이 근대화의 충격 속에서 전통이 단절되는 모습을 반영한다고 보았다. 그는 중국 사회의 혼란과 문화적 전환 속에서 전통과 현대의 깊은 갈등을 느꼈으며, 중국 젊은 세대의 서구화에 대한 우려와 함께 전통문화가 점차 침식되어가는 상황에 대해 깊은 안타까움을 표현했다. 두 사람의 교류 말미에 구홍명은 “노(老)”라는 단어를 통해 시대와 운명에 대한 감회를 드러냈고, 아쿠타가와는 가벼운 자기 풍자를 통해 생명과 운명의 무상함에 대한 깊은 이해를 표현했다. 본 논문은 아쿠타가와와 구홍명의 교류를 분석하여 20세기 초 동서양 문화 교차의 긴장을 드러내고, 언어, 전통, 근대화 과정에서의 문화적 충돌과 계승을 탐구하고자 하였다.

영문 초록

This article focuses on the exchange between Japanese modern literary figure Ryūnosuke Akutagawa and Chinese modern cultural figure Gu Hongming, exploring the collisions and reflections on language, culture, and individual fate. In 1921, Akutagawa visited China as a special correspondent for The Daily News and met with Gu Hongming, who was known for his advocacy of traditional culture. Their meeting became an important example of Sino-Japanese cultural exchange. Gu Hongming was born in an environment where Chinese and Western cultures intersected, received Western education, was fluent in multiple languages, and later devoted himself to promoting Chinese traditional culture. He emphasized the universal value of Confucianism and attempted to change Western prejudices about China through his English writings. Akutagawa recorded his interactions with Gu in his Beijing Diary, describing Gu's appearance, conversation, and cultural attitudes. The two communicated in English, a linguistic medium that facilitated their exchange but also created difficulties in achieving deeper mutual understanding due to the limitations of speaking in a non-native language. At the same time, Gu showed his respect for Japanese culture and his hopes for the transmission of Eastern cultural heritage by having his daughter recite the Japanese Iroha poem. However, Akutagawa viewed this formalized form of cultural transmission as a reflection of the sense of rupture in tradition under the impact of modernization. In the midst of social turmoil and cultural transformation in China, Akutagawa felt the deep conflict between tradition and modernity. He expressed concern over the Westernization of China's younger generation and lamented the gradual erosion of traditional culture. In their final exchange, Gu expressed his reflections on the era and fate through the word “old,” while Akutagawa, with light-hearted self-mockery, conveyed his profound understanding of the impermanence of life and destiny. This article analyzes the exchange between Akutagawa and Gu, revealing the tensions at the intersection of Eastern and Western cultures in the early 20th century and discussing the cultural conflicts and inheritance in the processes of language, tradition, and modernization.
