공지영의 『도가니』에 나타난 서발턴의 발화행위 연구 - 아렌트의 파리아 관점과의 상관성을 중심으로

국문 초록

본 논문은 공지영의 『도가니』 에 나타나는 서발턴의 발화행위가 지닌 의미를 살펴보려는 데에 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 탈식민적 페미니즘과 아렌트의 파리아 관점과의 상관성을 중심으로 분석한다. 왜냐하면 공지영의 『도가니』 속 청각장애아의 재현에서 ‘타자’와 ‘말’이 가장 중요하게 다루어진다는 점이 두 관점과 밀접한 관련을 가지기 때문이다. 공지영의 『도가니』는 서발턴 청각장애아가 ‘보이고’, 그들의 일관된 증언이 ‘들리도록’ 재현되었다. 청각장애아는 자애학원에서 벌어지는 총체적인 테러 속에서도 저항자 의식을 잃지 않고 목소리를 낸 자각한 파리아였던 것이다. 이렇게 공지영의 『도가니』는 지우기와 침묵시키기에 의해 들리지 못했던 ‘타자의 목소리’를 재현해 낸다. 즉 공지영의『도가니』는 타자화된 서발턴을 긍정적으로 해체한 작품인 것이다. 한마디로, 공지영의『도가니』는 ‘듣기 행위’ 그 자체를 지향하였다는 의미를 지닌다. 왜냐하면 청각장애아가 행한 발화행위의 실패에 주목했다는 점이 일종의 듣기 행위이기 때문이다. 청각장애아들은 오래전부터 격렬하게 말해왔다. 하지만 그들의 이야기는 잊히고 있었다. 공지영의『도가니』가 담아내듯 소통하려고 전력투구하였으나 실패하는 청각장애아의 발화행위는 결국 이들이 처한 대타성의 문제적 역사를 사유하게 한다. 즉 고립되어 목소리마저 상실당해 온 청각장애아처럼, 일방적으로 타자가 되어버린 서발턴의 삶과 역사를 재조명하는 일은 중요한 것이다. 따라서 공지영의『도가니』는 총체화될 수 없는 사람을 중시한다는 점과, 지워지고 침묵되어온 목소리에 주목한다는 점에서 아렌트의 파리아 관념과 스피박의 서발턴 관념이 상통함도 알게 해준다. 또한 일방적으로 폐제되어왔던 청각장애아에 대한 대표/재현의 문제를 돌아보게 한다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to examine the meaning of the subaltern's utterances appearing in Gong Ji-young's 『Dogani』. To this end, the analysis is focused on the correlation between postcolonial feminism and Arendt's view of Pariah. This is because the fact that ‘others’ and ‘words’ are the most important in the reproduction of the deaf child in Gong Ji-young's『Dogani』is closely related to the two perspectives. Gong Ji-young's『Dogani』 was reproduced so that Subaltern children with hearing impairments could be ‘seen’ and ‘heard’ of their consistent testimony. The deaf child was a “self-aware pariah” who spoke up without losing rebel consciousness despite the total terrorism taking place at the charity school. In this way, 『Dogani』paid attention to the 'voice of the other' that could not be reproduced by erasing and silencing. In other words, Gong Ji-young's 『Dogani』 is a work that positively deconstructs the otherized Subaltern. In a word, Gong Ji-young's 『Dogani』 has the meaning of aiming for “act of listening” itself. 『Dogani』paid attention to the failure of the speech act performed by deaf children ,this is a kind of act of listening. The deaf children have been speaking fiercely for a long time. But their fiercely speaking have been forgotten.As contained in Gong Ji-young's『Dogani』, the speech act of the deaf children who have tried their best to communicate but failed ultimately makes us think about the problematic history of alterity that they face. It is important to reexamine the life and history of the subalterrn who has unilaterally become the other, just like the deaf children who have been isolated and even lost their voices. Therefore, Gong Ji-young's 『Dogani』 emphasizes the person who cannot be totalized and focuses on the voice that has been erased and silenced, showing that Arendt's concept of the pariah and Spivak's concept of the subaltern are similar.It also allows us to look back on the problem of speaking-for/re-presetation of deaf children, who have been unilaterally foreclosure.
