『삼한습유』를 활용한 고전문학교육 방안 연구

국문 초록

본고는 고전문학교육 기본 텍스트로 김소행의 『삼한습유』를 제안하였다. 『삼한습유』는 19세기 장편한문소설을 대표하는 작품으로, 고전문학 전공자들에게는 잘 알려져 있고 연구 결과 또한 다양하다. 그러나 그 결과에 비해 대학교육에서는 거의 활용되지 않은 작품이다. 『삼한습유』는 작가 김소행의 불운(不運)한 삶과 부지(不知己)의 현실을 극복하고 『삼한습유』라는 텍스트로 자신을 한계 지었던 세계와 맞서는 서사를 담고 있다. 특히 실존 인물 향랑을 재구성하여 자신의 이상과 욕망을 투영하고 이를 작품에 실현시켰다. 여기서 김소행의 진보적인 사유를 엿볼 수 있다. 또한 작품의 구성, 짜임새는 물론이거니와, 주장을 설득력 있게 제시하는 김소행의 문장력과 논리적 사고는 당대 문장가들 사이에서 시는 이백(李白), 두보(杜甫), 문장은 사마천(司馬遷)과 장자(莊子) 등에 비견될 만큼 높이 평가되었다. 이에 본고는 텍스트 『삼한습유』를 고전문학교육 중 논증적 글쓰기와 토론의 기본 텍스트로 삼아 이를 활용하는 방안을 제시하였다. 특히 『삼한습유』에 제시된 ‘결혼에 대한 향랑 부모와 향량의 인식 차이’를 드러내는 대목과 향랑의 환생과 개과, 천자와 마왕 전투 장면에서 드러난 ‘귀신론’ 심성론’에 대한 논쟁 서사 등은 지금 학습자에게도 매우 유효한 문제의식을 던져준다. 이에 본고는 결혼관에 대한 향랑과 향랑 모의 인식 차이를 제시하면서 현대적 관점으로 문학교육에 활용하는 방안을 제안하였다. 고전문학교육에서 ‘무엇을 읽을 것인가’ 그리고 ‘어떻게 읽을 것인가’에 대한 하나의 대안으로 그 의의를 찾을 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

This study proposes SamhanSupyu by Kim So-haeng as a foundational text for classical literature education. Recognized as a representative work of 19th-century classical Korean fiction written in classical Chinese, SamhanSupyu is well-known among scholars of classical literature, with extensive research conducted on the text. However, despite the breadth of academic engagement, its utilization in university curricula remains remarkably limited. The narrative of SamhanSupyu embodies Kim So-haeng’s endeavor to transcend the adversities of his unfortunate life and the societal constraints imposed upon him, confronting his limitations through the creation of this literary work. Particularly, the reconstruction of the historical figure Hyangnang serves as a projection of the author's ideals and aspirations, effectively realized within the text. This reconstruction reveals Kim So-haeng's progressive intellectual outlook. The meticulous structure and composition of the work, as well as the compelling articulation of arguments through Kim’s rhetorical prowess and logical rigor, have been esteemed to a level comparable to literary greats such as Li Bai, Du Fu in poetry, and Sima Qian, Zhuangzi in prose. Accordingly, this study suggests employing SamhanSupyu as a core text for rhetorical writing and debate in classical literature education. Notably, key narrative segments such as the contrasting perceptions of marriage between Hyangnang and her parents, Hyangnang’s reincarnation and remarriage, and the celestial battle between the Emperor and the Demon King provide students with profound thematic inquiries still relevant today. This study proposes utilizing these narrative elements to explore contemporary perspectives in literature education, addressing the divergence in views on marriage between Hyangnang and her mother. Through such an approach, Samhan Supyu offers a meaningful alternative to the questions of “what to read” and “how to read” in classical literature education.
