유아교사가 본 그림책 속 외국인

국문 초록

본 연구는 한국 그림책 작가들이 외국인을 어떻게 표현하며 이를 접한 유아교사들은 독자로서 어떤 인상과 메시지를 받는지 살펴보는 것이 목적이다. 분석대상 그림책은 현재 서울시와 수도권 지역소재 유치원과 어린이집 30곳에 비치되어 있는 국내 그림책 27권이다. 위 그림책을 추천한 30명의 유아교사가 참여자가 되어 그림과 글을 통해 외국인이 묘사된 방법을 살펴보고 자신이 받은 인상과 메시지에 관한 자료를 제공하였다. 참여자들은 아동문학 작품분석과 그림책의 표현 기법에 대해 2차례사전 훈련을 받았다. 연구결과에 의하면 외국인 등장 그림책은 대부분 이야기 그림책이었으며, 다양한 인종과 국적의 외국인은 주요 인물로 독자와 대등한 시각에서 이야기를 이끌어가는 역할을 하고 있었다. 등장 배경으로 외국인은 각국의 자연적· 문화적 상징물을 동반했다. 참여자들은 외국인에 대해 대체적으로 긍정적인 느낌을 받았으며, 외국과 타문화에 대한 정보와 흥미, 섞여 사는 사회로의 인식 및 교류, 외국인에 대한 동류의식, 이민자와 다문화 배경 가족에 대한 배려의 필요성을 감지하였다. 다문화교육과 이미지학의 적용을 논의하였다.

영문 초록

The aim of study was to investigate images of foreigners in Korean children’s picturebooks. Analyses were carried out on features and messages of foreigners, symbols they carried, and modality of pictorial texts of 27 picturebooks chosen by kindergarten teachers and care givers of nurseries in the capital area in South Korea. The teachers were currently enrolled in the in-service training course, in which there were one-term sessions for multicultural education. They participated in the analyses in this study, not only choosing target books but also data collection. It was found that most Korean picture books about foreigners were a story-picturebook type. Foreigners were often main characters and the first speakers in the stories. Introducing their own culture was the most common role of foreigners, wearing traditional clothing and eating traditional food. Nationalities of the foreign characters varied across continents. The modality of foreign images was realistic in nearly all the books. In general, the participants got positive feelings towards foreigners in the picturebooks. Implications were made on imagology for early childhood education teacher training and multi-cultural education.
