국문 초록

본 연구는 군대 내 사열대(査閱臺)가 가지는 공간적·권력적 의미를 분석하는 데 초점을 맞춘다. 사열대는 군대 조직에서 지휘관과 병사 간의 위계질서를 시각적으로 구현하는 주요 상징물로, 푸코(Michel Foucault)의 감시와 처벌 이론을 통해 그 기능과 상징성을 조명하고자 한다. 특히, 본 연구는 높이, 방향, 발언이라는 세 가지 관점을 중심으로 사열대가 권력의 메커니즘을 어떻게 작동시키는지를 살펴본다. 첫째, 사열대의 ‘높이’는 지휘관의 권위를 물리적으로 강조하며, 병사들에게 지속적인 감시의 시선을 내면화하게 만든다. 둘째, ‘방향’은 지휘관과 병사 간의 시선을 구조화하여 권력 관계를 조직화하며, 이는 푸코의 판옵티콘 개념과 연결된다. 셋째, ‘발언’의 주체로서 지휘관은 권력을 행사하는 유일한 존재로 자리하며, 병사들은 침묵을 강요받음으로써 규율화된 주체로 형성된다. 이러한 분석을 통해, 사열대가 단순한 지휘 공간이 아니라 권력의 물리적 구현체이자 군사문화의 핵심적인 요소임을 밝히고자 한다. 본 연구는 군대 내 공간적 권력 작동 방식을 규명하는 데 기여할 뿐만 아니라, 사열대의 역할과 의미를 재고할 필요성을 제시한다

영문 초록

This study focuses on analyzing the spatial and power-related significance of the reviewing stand (査閱臺) in the military. The reviewing stand serves as a key symbol in military organizations, visually reinforcing the hierarchical structure between commanders and soldiers. By applying Michel Foucault’s Discipline and Punish theory, this research aims to examine the functions and symbolism of the reviewing stand. Specifically, the study explores how the mechanisms of power operate through three perspectives: height, direction, and speech. First, the height of the reviewing stand physically emphasizes the authority of commanders, leading soldiers to internalize the gaze of constant surveillance. Second, direction structures the visual relationship between commanders and soldiers, organizing power dynamics an aspect closely related to Foucault’s concept of the panopticon. Third, the privilege of speech is monopolized by commanders, rendering them the sole agents of authority, while soldiers are forced into silence and thus shaped into disciplined subjects. Through this analysis, the study reveals that the reviewing stand is not merely a functional platform for command but a physical embodiment of power and a central element of military culture. This research contributes to understanding the spatial mechanisms of power in the military and highlights the need to reconsider the role and significance of the reviewing stand.
